Police identify 40-year-old man as person of interest in mass shooting
    in Lewiston, Maine

The man suspected of fatally shooting more than a dozen people in
Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night is still at large, police said
Thursday, as his family urged him to turn himself in.

Law enforcement officials are looking for Robert Card, 40, whom they
said is considered armed and dangerous.

Card, a firearms instructor and a longtime Army reservist, began to
hear voices that were saying "horrible" things about him about a
couple of months ago when he was fitted for high-powered hearing aids, according to Katie Card, who is married to his brother.

She said his mental health had deteriorated quickly.

"He was picking up voices that he had never heard," she told NBC News.
"His mind was twisting them around. He was humiliated by the things
that he thought were being said."
    ...
    ...
Card is accused of killing at least 18 people and injuring many others
at a bar and bowling alley, police said.
    ...
    ...
Liam Kent, 24, told NBC News that he grew up about a mile away from
Card's family and would occasionally see him around town.

Kent said the family is well known in the area and operates a
construction business and described them as "Second Amendment
enthusiasts" who embrace a "'don't tread on me' mindset."

Unfortunately, no matter how carefully you stay away, nuts with guns
often come to you. Imagine the folks killed had just gone out for a
    beer and/or some bowling.

The dude had mental issues, but was able to buy guns. And now that all
the red flags are being revisited, lots of officials are discussing how
he 'fell through the cracks.' Bullshit, they screwed up.

Not defending his actions, but when I hear this,

"...people around town knew to "stay away" from the family."

he hit three different places with bullets...maybe had a hero complex
(firearm instructor & longtime Army reservist) but was apparently
rejected in his community, I'd say there is more to this story.

Maine Sheriff Says He Sent Statewide Alert About Gunman Last Month

The sheriff said the gunman had made threats against the Army base
where he was assigned, prompting an alert to all law enforcement
agencies in the state weeks before the mass shooting.

A sheriff in Maine says he sent an alert to all law enforcement
agencies in the state last month after learning that an Army reservist
had made threats against his base, a notification that came weeks
before the reservist fatally shot 18 people in America's deadliest
    mass shooting this year.

Sheriff Joel Merry of Sagadahoc County said he sent the alert sometime
in September in an effort to find the reservist, Robert R. Card II,
40, who was said to have made threats regarding the Army Reserve
center in Saco, Maine. He said he sent a deputy to Mr. Card's home but
that the deputy did not find him there, prompting the sheriff to send
    out the notice.

The revelation is the strongest sign yet that law enforcement was
aware that Mr. Card was a potential danger before he carried out a
rampage at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston on Wednesday night.

"The guys, from what I know, paid due diligence to this and did
attempt to locate Mr. Card and they couldn't," Sheriff Merry said in
    an interview on Saturday night.
