Minneapolis ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted in the murder

Federal government has various options for incarnation.

Years ago, a white collar person maintained a golf course, and did
other odd jobs, while living in a dormitory with the understanding if
he got "fever and ran" they would send him to a real prison.

Minimum security institutions, also known as Federal Prison Camps
(FPCs), have dormitory housing, a relatively low staff-to-inmate
ratio, and limited or no perimeter fencing. These institutions are
    work- and program-oriented. https://www.bop.gov/about/facilities/federal_prisons.jsp =========================

I'm surprised they sent him to apparently a regular prison.

High security institutions, also known as United States Penitentiaries
(USPs), have highly secured perimeters (featuring walls or reinforced
fences), multiple- and single-occupant cell housing, the highest staff-to-inmate ratio, and close control of inmate movement.

Not really a surprise. Chauvin has had a target on his back since his conviction. They were never going to be able to keep him 'safe'
    forever.

I'm surprised it's taken this long.

Why should he be treated any different than other prisoners?

I believe he requested to be in that max security prison, which failed
    in protecting a prisoner.

Why should he be treated any different than other prisoners? The U.S.
has already decided that prisons aren't for rehabilitation of prisoners.
The U.S. has already decided that prisoners do not have a right to feel
safe. Prisoners get stabbed every day, and nobody bats an eye, but
because this murderer was a cop, you want to give him a special pass?
