• WHO AM I TIPPING

If You've Had About Enough Of Tipping Culture, These 26 Photos Will
Infuriate You As Much As They Infuriate Me

Not to sound like a curmudgeon, but I find it super annoying. First of
all, I think it's messed up that servers, bartenders, and other
service workers aren't paid a living wage to begin with. Second of
all, I know manager greed and tip-sharing means the person I'm tipping
may not even see the money. And then there are times when massive
corporations expect tips, and I'm like...for what? I'd honestly rather
people raise the prices than expect tips, and then raise wages, which
I feel is better since there will always be people out there who don't
tip, and that's not fair to service workers.
    ...
    ...
Okay, sorry, rant over. But in case you're as fired up as I am on the
topic, here are 26 photos that will make you seethe with rage.

    1. This ELEVATOR is asking for a tip. It's a machine!!! Who does the
money go to??? It says "staff members" in light print, but which ones?

    2. This landlord who asked for a tip on rent has got to be
    delusional.
    ...
    ...
    9. Asking for a tip at a SELF-SERVICE CHECK-OUT is going too far.
You're literally tipping your own service, but you don't get the
    money.

Didn't look at the photos; seething anyway. Don't forget this one from
your cashier, as s/he turns the little terminal to you. "there's going
to be a question there for you to anwer." The question turns out to be: "choose how much to tip: 20%, 25%, 30%, other" the cashier watches you
as you choose a button. Total bullshit.

American tipping culture needs a reset. And the items cited in this
    list appea outrageous.

I've refused to do it, but who was the 'wizard' who came up with and implemented neo-tipping paradigm?

I've known of a higher end restaurant that includes the tip within the
billing (you pay), but that article suggested some places might force
    a tip when paying.

I was told (could be apocryphal) that tip was originally T.I.P. - "to
insure promptness." Given the insure vs ensure I'm not convinced the
story is true, but if so, it represented the $20 you'd slip your waiter
*at the beginning of the meal* to ensure good service. And it devolved
    from there.

Better question is, who's the antisocial who decided the standard
options would start at 20%. What am I, made of money?

Just let restaurant staff earn a living wage, and let tips go back to
what they were intended to be - a favor and a courtesy, for service
above and beyond. AND, paid after the service is rendered.

"Tipping may date back to the Roman era, but most sources trace it
back to medieval Europe, when wealthy visitors to homes would leave
tips for servants who provided good service."

In the U.S., tipping has a complex and controversial history

The American style of tipping your server emerged during
reconstruction and took decades to be accepted. But it became
entrenched during Prohibition and is now a deeply ingrained social
    norm.

It is safe to say that William Scott was no fan of tipping. In his
book, "The Itching Palm," Scott called tipping "un-American" and
"flunkeyism" that "borders on bribery" and amounts to "legalized
robbery." He also wrote, "someday, somehow, it will be uprooted like
    African slavery."
    ...
    ...
Inside restaurants, tipping has become both a management tool and a
method for operators to keep wages low....Tips are sometimes based on
the looks or race of the server rather than on the level of service
    provided.
    ...
    ...
Government rules have enabled tipping, even as some states push to end
it. And yet, the war for talent has led more types of restaurants that
at one time actively avoided tipping to adopt the practice, while the
expected amount for tips has gradually risen with the adoption of
suggested tipping practices on receipts. Get rid of the tip? If
anything, the practice is more ingrained than ever.

A new survey of 9,000 people in eight countries revealed that Germans
-- not Americans -- were the best tippers of the nations surveyed.
    Americans came in second.Jun 4, 2013
    ====================

Delaware ranked first, with the highest average tip percentage at
21.8%. Indiana was second at 20.6%. Kentucky ranked third, also at
    20.6%.
    ==================

For some Americans, tipping brings trouble: Sixteen percent of U.S.
respondents said they'd been asked to leave a tip by staff, 9 percent
said they'd been confronted about a tip, and 3 percent said that a
tipping situation had ruined their vacation.

It's a well known fact that the best tippers are single men and former restaurant workers.
