Judy Garland's experience while filming "The Wizard of Oz"
was a tragic example of the harsh realities young actors often faced
    during that era.

When she was only 16, she was put on a strict diet of mainly chicken
    soup and coffee.

Additionally, she was encouraged to smoke approximately 80 cigarettes
a day, a common practice in the entertainment industry during that
    time.

Keep the person stimulated all day long.

"Production on the bulk of the Technicolor sequences was a long and
exhausting process that ran for over six months, from October 1938 to
March 1939. Most of the cast worked six days a week and had to arrive
as early as 4 a.m. to be fitted with makeup and costumes, and often
did not leave until 7 pm or later."
