    NordVPN introduces transparency reports

    https://nordvpn.com/blog/nordvpn-introduces-transparency-reports/

They claim they don't release customer info to third parties, but are
skimpy on details concerning law enforcement.

They indicate "Number of automated DMCA requests: 2,421,053," but
don't explain what is happening here.

Their current policy supports cyberbullies since they implicitly claim
    they don't keep records.

But on the other hand, they say " We have never disclosed any user
data or provided any access to user traffic to any third party." I
believe "third party" excludes law enforcement

third party - A third party is someone who is not one of the main
people involved in a business agreement or legal case, but who is
involved in it in a minor role.

Obviously this is just marketing. Look at who their founders are, who the owners are, and where they are based.

Then you can conclude that of course they will release any information, in secret, that will benefit them.

No company will refuse to comply, when the company itself is at risk,
    there's to much money involved.

Therefore, the only rock-solid solution is a federated or decentralized solution that is run on an open source basis which does not need funds,
legal system or a government to function.

From news tidbits, there are VPN providers who sell your data to
third parties, but NordVPN does not.

But if there is a warrant from any government organization, I'm sure
all VPN providers 'open' their doors with a welcome mat.

As noted: They indicate "Number of automated DMCA requests:

NordVPN does not log users' site activities, but I assume they would
    if legally requested.

I'm still curious about those "automated DMCA requests"

DMCA request - If you find infringing copies of your work on a
website, you may notify the website with a DMCA takedown notice. The
DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) sets out a process for
copyright holders to send an official notice requesting the service
provider remove the infringing material. https://library.georgetown.edu/copyright/dmca-takedown

I assume NordVPN is about providing a VPN service. Automated might
suggest transmitted words/files are checked. 2,421,053
requests...like all users are scanned, or what? Maybe related to Hollywood/Musical take down requests, or government requests.

Usenet use to be monitored, I assume via word scanning, but unknown if
    still done.

Exactly my point. As for selling, that is what they say, but I wouldn't be
so sure. Personally I would only trust my own VPN setup or an open source service. But horses for courses.

We do not need VPN services.
We need better laws that protects the end user.

We need to change the law before the Patriot-Act came into play along
    with any other anti-privacy law.

Hack the connections. Block em if you have to. But our privacy is a
right people have died for and fought for.

    .........

Making more hostile laws is not going to get somebody to abide by
    stupid.
