My LG OLED TV is about 2 years old, and I see no ads. It is internet
connected due to the wife, but I only use it with a radxa zero and kodi,
so I never see any commercials. This is a good thing to check if I need to
buy a new TV some time.

I think what they do is make you connect it to the internet initially,
or it won't ever work. The various hacker news threads related to this
have a lot of discussion that reveal:

    * TV makes now make more money selling your viewing habits than on
    hardware

    * The new tech that screenshots whatever you're watching so it can be
fingerprinted and identified and then that info sold is a big business

    * It's getting near impossible to buy a non-smart TV, and that is on
purpose, they don't want you buying a TV that's not internet connected
    because of the above.

Screw the whole industry. There isn't anything decent worth watching.
    And the ad industry, sheesh.

On a different note, Google's App Store

On one Smartphone, I downloaded a free app.

Months later, the same app on another Smartphone.

Google knew I had done this twice, and even showed me the model number
of the Smartphone when I downloaded it the first time.

And we thought Cookies were bad...many companies sucking up our
    habits/etc.

I still wonder why OEM vehicle companies were selling (indirectly)
driver information, which ended up in insurance companies data bases.

What a rip, buy a new vehicle, and the OEM is selling your driving
    habits, etc.

Smart TVs are spying on everyone

Regulators know this is a nightmare and have done little to stop it.
Privacy advocacy group wants that to change

Smart TVs are watching their viewers and harvesting their data to
benefit brokers using the same ad technology that denies privacy on
    the internet.

In a report titled "How TV Watches Us: Commercial Surveillance in the
Streaming Era," the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD) outlines the
expansive "commercial surveillance system" that has infested Smart TVs
    - aka connected TVs or CTVs - and video streaming services.
