Oakland's international airport may not use San Francisco in its name, according to a temporary order from a federal judge, after the city of
San Francisco complained that letting it do so would suggest it was
linked to San Francisco International Airport.

It's like saying flying to Newark is going to NYC.

Meanwhile in the real world... "nobody cares"! ;) Airports are places I
try hard to avoid at all cost. The name is not a factor at all.

Ha, good point. Ask any New Yorker if they consider Newark part of NYC
and get "fun" answers and results.

Sounds to me like a branding piss-fight though. And I'll bet flying to
    Oakland is cheaper.

Air flight time, no....but landing/etc...maybe not, unless there is a
    large difference in airport charges.

Airfare these days I think are more dependent upon when booked, "who"
    you are (online), etc.

I suspect these days, if the plane is 1/2 loaded, and a ticket was
bought at the last minute, the airlines would stiff the consumer. And
of course, the CSR can't cut a deal if the potential passenger says "I
    don't have to fly today."

I decided to check. Using Expedia I looked for flights from OAK to EHR
(Oakland International to Newerk, NJ) and from SFO to JFK for December
    9th to 13th.

Oakland to Newark cheapest is $229.
San Francisco to Idlewild cheapest is $233.

Four dollars. But the big difference is the cheaper flight has a two
hour layover in Las Vegas, while the other is direct.

Hold on, book it to LV, and spend several days there, then book to NY

    Or book it this way

    AI Overview

Yes, you can split an airline flight between several cities by booking
a "multi-city" flight, which allows you to fly to multiple
destinations on a single reservation, essentially stopping at
    different cities throughout your trip.

If wanting to use rail service, etc., each airport there would have to
    be considered.

For instance, SFO if going to Santa Cruz, CA via rail service.

Flying direct to Kennedy compared to 2 layovers on the way to Newark for
    only $4 more is insane.

One layover of two hour duration.

Flying direct to Kennedy compared to 2 layovers on the way to Newark for
only $4 more is insane. But then, so is the entire airline industry. I
had an emergency a few years back where I had to fly from Vancouver to Boston. I paid $675. The guy sitting next to me paid $96. Go figure.

Yikes! Did he book well ahead of time? There used to be a website
where you could find a cheaper flight by getting off at the layover stop
(your actual destination) and skipping the last leg of the flight. I
think the airlines weren't fond of this, and petitioned to have it removed.
