German arrest warrant over Nord Stream blast mystery

    14 August 2024

German state prosecutors trying to solve the mystery of who blew up
the Nord Stream gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea in 2022 have issued
an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diving instructor.

The suspect has been named as Volodymyr Z by German media, who have
treated the sabotage like a sensational true crime drama.

Ines Peterson, a spokeswoman for Germany's prosecutor general,
declined to confirm the arrest warrant, telling the BBC that her
office never commented so as not to jeopardise the investigation by
giving the suspect a chance to escape.

But the Polish prosecutor general's spokeswoman, Anna Adamiak, in
Warsaw told the BBC's Adam Easton that a European Arrest Warrant had
indeed been passed to them by German prosecutors.

When Polish officers went to Volodymyr Z's home in early July, he had
already left the country for Ukraine, she said.

He had until then been living in a quiet residential area of Pruszkow,
a town near Warsaw, German media say.

According to an investigation by three German media outlets, including
public broadcaster ARD, Volodymyr Z was part of a team of experienced
Ukrainian divers who in September 2022 hired a German yacht, sailed
out into the Baltic Sea and planted the explosives, blowing up three
of the four Nord Stream pipelines.

A Ukrainian man and a Ukrainian woman are also suspected of
    involvement.

And there everyone was blaming the Russians!

Who'd have thought it it eh? The Ukrainians can play a dirty

I believe then, the fingers were pointing at some 1/2 dozen
countries, with their motives for doing it.

Most of which never made any sense...

On the balance of probabilities pro-Ukrainian agents were always
    the most likely suspects.

    The Ukrainians

Only suggests several people were involved, but no direct link
    to the government of Ukraine.

Of course not, as they are all nice boys that stroke puppies and
    kiss children!

In a dirty war, trust nobody.

Yes, blowing up the gas lines, so natural gas would pass thru Ukraine,
which receives transit fees, is a strong motive for pointing the
finger at the government of Ukraine. But, any informed "patriot" with
diving skills could have put 2 + 2 together.

I would think many people knew about that pipeline, and any sailor
would know how deep the water is below. I've seen maps for submarine
cables worldwide, and most likely, there are maps for those pipelines.

I mean logically, why would russia blow up their own assets that keeps
europe hooked on gas, earning then money?

I'd say ukraine all the way, since europe was so slow in the beginning to
drop russian gas. Better making europe drop gas fast, by blowing up one of russias best tools of influence.

The other pipelines should be blown up as well. That will hurt russia and
it will force EU to act quicker.

They have to. The world will only arm them at subsistence levels, in order
to have any chance of winning they have to play extremely dirty. I am in
fact surprised at how little they play dirty. But I guess they cannot go
all in, since they depend on the good will of the west, and the hope that
the west eventually will make up its mind to finish the war.

Logic suggests a motive would be involved, but why is this happening
(undersea cables being cut) if Ukraine did it? The blame finger seems
to point to Russia is behind this matter.

Finland seizes ship carrying Russian oil after undersea cable cut

Finland on Thursday seized a ship carrying oil for Russia in relation
to the recent cutting of an undersea cable connecting electricity to
Estonia as concern mounts over ships disrupting power and gas lines in
    European waters.

I'd say ukraine all the way

Whoever did it knew about pipelines' seabed placement. So the question
is, how many people would have been aware of where the pipes were

It's not clear how many people were aware of the exact location of the

If Ukrainian divers did it, how did they get the pipelines' location information?

Well, when it comes to undersea cables, it is cheap for russia to do, and causes concern for the enemy. No arguments there when it comes to russia
    doing it.
