• detailed account of ICE captivity

From JAB@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 19 16:04:40 2025
I'm the Canadian who was detained by Ice for two weeks. It felt like I
    had been kidnapped

I was stuck in a freezing cell without explanation despite eventually
having lawyers and media attention. Yet, compared with others, I was
    lucky

To put things into perspective: I had a Canadian passport, lawyers,
resources, media attention, friends, family and even politicians
advocating for me...Imagine what this system is like for every other
    person in there
    ...
here was no explanation, no warning. One minute, I was in an
immigration office talking to an officer about my work visa, which had
been approved months before and allowed me, a Canadian, to work in the
US. The next, I was told to put my hands against the wall, and patted
down like a criminal before being sent to an Ice detention center
without the chance to talk to a lawyer.

I haven't been to the US for 10 years, but when I did travel to the US,
stories like the above would always go through my head when I was entering
    the country.

With the "Alien Enemies Act", even US citizens could be exported
without due process, if ICE did not evaluate each person.

When in Europe, I was without these thoughts, but if I traveled to
Mexico again, I'd be concerned with the cartels/gangs

Really?! That's absurd! I mean it is one thing to treat other citizens
like this, but your own citizens?

Is there any kind of statistics for how often they check laptops? I have documents on my laptop, and by law, I cannot show them to others, so I
would legally have to refuse if someone wanted to search it.

I hope that _if_ I did so, at least they would politely allow me to take
the first flight back home again.

No, europe has adopted the religion of uncontrolled, free immigration. We
love to accept terrorists from arabia.

I'm no fan of the US system, but the EU systems errs too much the other
way. Surely there must be some balance to strike here.

We have no idea who evaluates ICE, but based upon news tidbits, they
are not doing their lawful duties, as prescribed.

Due process "is how any of us can have confidence that the folks being
packed onto airplanes and whisked off to El Salvador are members of
TdA--as opposed to US citizens; political dissidents; or others whom
the Trump administration would just as soon be rid of."
    ...
    ...
Even if the Alien Enemy Act applies to TdA, which is itself quite a
fraught question, how do we know that the folks who were put on those
planes and flown to (and imprisoned in) El Salvador are actually part
of TdA? Are we really supposed to just take the government's word for
it? The same government that filed a declaration in the D.C. Circuit
Monday night in which one of its immigration enforcement officers
argued, apparently with a straight face, that "[t]he lack of specific information about each individual actually highlights the risk they
    pose"?

The T-Borg is very upset that a judge has put on hold the "Alien
Enemies Act". Well of course, if those being deported had to be
confirmed (due process) in court, this would slow down the process.

With the "Alien Enemies Act" and nobody verifying each potential
person to be deported, then the ICE mice can play, and the T-Borg can
say "look at what I have done."

As stated before, news accounts suggest ICE has deported persons not
    associated with that gang.

It can. Gang tattoos are a thing. El salvador have managed to successfully lower their homicide rates by taking a tough stance on crime and gang
    members.

US immigration officials have reportedly identified many recently

If that is the case, then it is a clear signal to people who think it is
fun to tattoo themselves with symbols which can be interpreted as gang
symbols to perhaps think again, or have them removed. I cannot say I have
much sympathy with people who tattoo themselves with potential gang
tattoos and then complain about being harassed by the authorities.
