Huh - fond memories of WKRP in Cincinnatti (pilot episode) when Johnny
    D. scratches the record off of Lawrence Welk and puts on the Rolling
    Stones as they change format.

    What a great show.

Lots of AM radio stations changed formats in 1960s and onward.

I suspect shows like below affected audiences musical interests, so
more/more radio stations jumped ship to a new format in larger cities.
In rural areas, same old format for years.

I suspect the increase in home TV assisted also. "In 1948, 1 percent
of U.S. households owned at least one television; in 1955, 75 percent
    did."
