• App to name mountains etc??

From Connor Shannon@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jun 2 22:35:58 2023
Hi is there some app where you can point your iPhone and it will tell you what mountains and stuff you're seeing? Like the AR in FlightRadar where you can point your phone and it tells you what plane you're seeing. Or a star program for nighttime. This
one would be easier b'cuz mountains don't move (much)!

I'm not the family expert on this topic, but the Google app can leverage
its "Lens" feature to identify features in your photos.

Neat idea. Very doable. And with the magic of Google search easily

Thank you Alan I guess I didn't put the right words in Google to find it. That one is $4.99 which is fine I might buy it but also I found one called Peak Visor that's free for one place a day. I'm not hiking so I'll probably only be in one place every
day but if some body has tried Peak Finder let me know if its better. But I just tried Peak Visor and it worked great!

Badgolferman please tell us how you can point Google Maps to the horizon and have it tell you what you're seeing I sure don't know how to do that.

Download the regular Google app and use its Lens (camera or photos) feature.

Surely you understand Google Maps shows points of interest when you are
near them. It even has a compass for you to use to determine the correct direction. A mountain with a name would be shown on one of the views
    (default, satellite, terrain).

Duh like I said I'm NOT near them I want to know whats on the HORIZON. If there are lots of hills I can't tell by looking at a map which hill is which. I even tried zooming in on Google Maps in terrain view and there are LOTS of hills that show up like
points on the terrain but google doesn't say what they're called.

I was one of those who suggested that. I guess you have to get close
enough to a mountain to distinguish some of its unique profile. Maybe
too many mountains look too similar from a great distance. ;-)

The magnetic compass in a phone is ±20° 95% of the time. While
sometimes very accurate (when testing), it is also often 20° off (or more).

So from position x to a mountain 10 km away has an uncertainty of 6 km laterally.

Why, absent an image of a mountain or 2 to profile, it might not work.

I'll play with this next time I have a chance.

(That said, using apps like Sky Guide, the error doesn't seem very bad
at all - is it also using the cameras to identify key stars?).

Thank you Chris and Alan yeah probably a bunch of hills or mountains looks pretty much the same. The other app I tried is pretty good altho like Alan said it's kind of off to the side it doesn't know exactly where its pointing. But it puts the names so I
can shift it sideways and read them.
