Installing it now. Some really nice new features.
Apple must have been working really hard on all these major improvements!
The biggest improvement between iOS 16 and 17 seems to be this almost
perfect copy of what google did a couple of years ago changing the prompt.
"Hey, Siri" is now just "Siri.
Other than that, the article goes on to explain these major additions.
Messages
You can now filter the search with cascading sub searches.
Audio message transcripts can be read from within Messages.
Messages copied from WhatsApp the bubble swipe to reply.
You can now jump to the oldest unread message in a group.
StandBy
These 3 full-screen widgets come up when flipped on charge.
By default the first is two widgets, one being your homescreen.
But you can add more widgets like a weather widget or reminders.
Swipe left to get the 2nd standby screen which is a photo album.
Swipe left again to get the 3rd standby screen which is a clock.
Maps
Apple copied the Google Maps ability to download offline maps.
According to the article, those are the main features of iOS 17.
Other even more minor features are listed at the bottom as follows.
You can create a contact poster and share it with your contacts.
They look great, so let's see if people start using them.
When is the last time you listened to a voicemail?
iOS 17 transcribes voicemail as people speak and leave you a message.
You can now leave voicemails in FaceTime.
They appear directly in the call history list.
Location-sharing finally works as expected in Messages.
Meaning that it is displayed directly in the conversation as a bubble.
There's a new check-in feature that can automatically notify your friends
and family members when you arrive home safely (or at a destination).
You can initiate an AirDrop by selecting content and putting the top of
your phone on top of someone else's phone. If you don't select anything,
you can use this gesture to share your contact info.
You can share passwords (and passkeys) with other people.
If you managed to convince your family to use a password manager like 1Password, now you can all switch to iCloud Passwords. Yay!
Autocorrect and dictation have been improved.
It takes a bit of time to get used to the new text suggestion system.
When you start playing a song or a video, iOS now automatically suggests
nearby AirPlay-enabled devices. It can be useful or annoying.
