• GPS loggers for iPhone.

From peter@easthope.ca@21:1/5 to All on Wed Feb 21 11:49:44 2024
    Hi,

To allow mapping, I want to log points while walking a trail and
upload a GPX or KML file without paying a fee.

For Android, GPS Logger from BasicAirData serves very well. Is there
    a comparable app for iPhone?

    Thanks, ... Peter E.

A quick search of the App Store shows plenty.

There are 53 free and advertisement free and in-app purchase free apps that show up in a search for "GPS Logger" in the Google Play Store, but only one
is by BasicAirData so I thank you for saying which particular one it was.

    Here is the link. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.basicairdata.graziano.gpslogger

I use the free version of Gaia for daily hikes and biking, as well as
planning things in mountainous regions. It's really very good.

I use "Trails". Free as long as you keep the number of recorded tracks
to 5 or less (in the app on your phone). Once you export a track to
your computer (in various formats) and delete it from your phone, you're
    good to go.

If you're traveling, then export the track to Notes, and delete it from
the app to keep the number of files managed by the app to 5 or less.

I have other apps as well, that I paid for a long time ago and they
still work many updates of iOS later ...

That's a great app. However, the free version is only one that works as
since 2022 it has stopped accepting payment and it hasn't been updated in three years.

A real shame it's an orphan as I haven't been able to find any alternative which matches it.

Well, I have it (and it works), and other apps that I paid for that
work. Trails is the most convenient to use - and I can start/stop and
monitor it from my Watch. (Not that that is all that necessary)

Not sure if anyone who never DL'd it before can still pull it (Trails)
    off of the AppStore.

Too bad. Hopefully he re-thinks his business model.

I personally don't mind paying a reasonable price for an app but I

Good. Then to the OP: recommended. To run it "free" just copy your
recorded trails to the Notes app on your phone to keep the number of
recordings under 5. Then of course from Notes you can upload to
programs such as Google Earth quite easily.

Or rent it for more in app storage events.

Nope. I use it in "rent free" mode. I have other GPS apps that I've
paid for, but don't need to pay an annual fee like Trails demands.

This just means offloading recordings as they occur to keep under the
qty 5 limit. (Prob'y missing other features, but I get all I need).

You're so driven by your hatred of everything Apple, you don't bother to
fact check your lame lies before blabbing them. Here's the truth:

In order to get something as trivial as GPS tracks for free, all Apple
users have to do is a basic App Store search, which leads them to
several apps that do just that. Here's one called Open GPX Tracker:

    <https://itunes.apple.com/app/open-gpx-tracker/id984503772>

It's opens source and free with time restrictions, no ads and no in-app-purchases, and all data stays on your device:

    <https://github.com/merlos/iOS-Open-GPX-Tracker>

Arlen loves to tout FOSS apps, and here is one such app that does
exactly what the OP wants, with 1005 privacy as well.

But reality won't stop Arlen (aka "Sten deJoode" and a slew of other
nyms) from shit posting, because shit posting is what he lives for. He literally spends hours and hours every day nym switching and shit
posting in the Apple news groups, all because he has a tiny, little hate
boner for Apple. He's a pathetic loser.
