• Siri / AI boost to be announced at the WWDC in June.

From Alan Browne@21:1/5 to All on Fri May 10 17:08:37 2024
Per an article in the NYT:

"Apple is expected to show off its A.I. work at its annual developers conference on June 10 when it releases an improved Siri that is more conversational and versatile, according to three people familiar with
the company’s work, who didn’t have permission to speak publicly. Siri’s underlying technology will include a new generative A.I. system that
will allow it to chat rather than respond to questions one at a time."

Goes on to state that generative AI will be native to Apple devices and
    not require a server connection.

"The update to Siri is at the forefront of a broader effort to embrace generative A.I. across Apple’s business. The company is also increasing
the memory in this year’s iPhones to support its new Siri capabilities.
And it has discussed licensing complementary A.I. models that power
chatbots from several companies, including Google, Cohere and OpenAI."

Whoopie. Can I turn it off? ALL of it?

Am I alone in not being at all interested in this "AI" nonsense? Microsoft is
going abolutely overboard with this junk in Windows 11, claiming it will be an
"Assistant that knows everything about you, all your email, all your texts and
everything you do on your PC".

Does that sound like a good idea? What could possibly go wrong with that? It reminds me of the Apple 1984 "Big Brother" ads. Why would I want my PC (or phone or whatever) watching and recording everything I do?

It's even worse when you learn iOS is the most exploited phone OS in
    history. https://www.cisa.gov/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog

Which is why the phrase "To own an iPhone is to already be hacked" is true.

Probably - or just don't invoke it.

Again - how you use a tool is what is important.

    Jerk and knee complex.

Apple ain't Microsoft. Its customers expect Apple to utilize AI in a responsible and private manner.

True, and I hope all of this junk is optional.

    Siri has always been optional.

No, but you don't speak for everyone, surely. I, for one, welcome
improvements in Siri. They are sorely needed.

I'm sure it will be. Apple would never force stuff on us like evil microsoft.

Probably you'll be able to go to settings and turn off all the AI stuff.

Me too. AI in everything is a useless garbage trend (taking over from
"smart" everything) that needs to be quickly dropped. :-(

Your Ludditery aside, AI will be getting more and more prevalent in more
and more places for more and more things.

Doubtful. AI is already embedded in iOS and some you can turn off
(e.g. autocorrect) and some you can't (e.g. photos categorisation or
    look up)

What you neglect to mention is that the AI you can't turn off on iOS
devices is done completely on device and isn't shared with Apple or
    anyone else.
