However... on this topic of a government "renaming" a strategic locale...

Russia, for example, is intent on renaming North America to "Ango-Saxon America" in its textbooks - which will reinforce Russian propaganda.

It's not only Russia that characterizes the world as Ango-Saxon controlled.
    <https://connections-qj.org/system/files/23.2.04_herd.pdf>

China wants the naming conventions of the Pacific Ocean to indicate Chinese influence and control in the same way Trump and Putin are by renaming seas.
    <https://www.voanews.com/a/why-is-china-renaming-disputed-locations-around-asia-/6385055.html>

Unfortunately, if it gets into the textbooks, which, I'm sure it does for
the Russian & Chinese renaming of strategic locations, it gets set in stone (because the worth of a country is mainly in the education of its kids).

The sad fact is, especially knowing how pernicious Apple's (brilliant) propaganda is, propaganda is effective in molding kids' beliefs systems
(e.g., kids don't know Apple's support is the worst in the industry).

Yes he does. His executive order to rename the body of water is pertinent
to US federal documents. He's not forcing the international community to change their documents.

I find it interesting that others think a government can't direct its
workers to use certain naming conventions in their official documents.

While I don't care what that gulf is called, the federal government has
every right to call it whatever they want to call it. The states have every right to call it something else in their documents, unless... and this is important... unless the Federal law forbids them from doing so.

That rule extends down from the top of the states to the bottom (e.g., at
every local level of government down to, oh, I guess the county & town).

As long as the Federal government doesn't forbid it, the states can do
whatever they want, but if the government forbids it, the states can't.

It would be interesting if anyone knows how the law is written (and no, I didn't click on any link as it's not a problem set I'm dealing with now).

Note: Putin recently renamed "North America" to "Anglo Saxon America".

Apple Adopting 'Gulf of America' Naming for Apple Maps
    ------------------------------------------------------
Apple is in the process of renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the
Gulf of America, and changes are already being made to the
Apple Maps app. When searching in the Maps app for Gulf of
Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico name is shown or the name is blank,
but tapping into the area shows the "Gulf of America" wording.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is rolling out the Maps change
in the United States today, so the name should shift for most
U.S. users in the near future. Apple plans to change the name
for all users globally in the future.

Google this week also made good on its promise to adopt the
new naming, and "Gulf of America" is now visible in both
    Google Maps and Waze.

Google and Apple use data from the U.S. Geographic Names
Information System (GNIS) when naming world locations, and
GNIS updated its database with the "Gulf of America" name
    change this week.

Google has explained that Maps users in the United States will
see "Gulf of America" instead of "Gulf of Mexico," while users
in Mexico will continue to see Gulf of Mexico. In the rest of
the world, the name for the body of water between Mexico and
Florida will continue to be named Gulf of Mexico, but Gulf of
America is shown in parentheses below. Apple might adopt
similar changes outside of the United States.

When U.S. President Donald Trump took office on January 20,
one of his first orders was changing the name of the Gulf of
Mexico to the Gulf of America. Other countries do not refer to
the area as the Gulf of America and are not required to accept
    the U.S. name.

Trump also said that Alaskan mountain Denali was being renamed
to Mt. McKinley, but Google Maps and ‌Apple Maps‌ have not yet
    made that change.

    <https://www.macrumors.com/2025/02/11/apple-maps-gulf-of-america/>

Dumbass Americans can try to call it whatever they like, but the
reality Trump the Chump has absolutely no offical say in what names are
given to things outside of American borders ... Gulf of Mexico is what
it will remain for anyone with more than half a braincell.

Yup. My 10th-generation iPad has it also as the "Gulf of America.

    Hi badgolferman,

It's interesting to read how Joerg Lorenz thinks, as he's the
quintessential uneducated prole in this (and the Android) ng.

Joerg is *different* than the Apple trolls such as Jolly Roger, who is the canonical "Apple is my God" troll, which means we can learn from both.

Joerg is, in some ways, much like Alan Baker, in that both feel they
understand fully what they don't even scratch the surface of in knowledge.

Neither Joerg Lorenz nor Alan Baker delve any deeper into anything other
than scratching the surface - and both are mere parrots - but fundamentally
    - while they're both mere unthinking parrots - Joerg Lorenz feels that
everyone else is stupid - and only he - Joerg the Scholar - knows all.

And yet, paradoxically, in every post, Joerg knows less than nothing.

As for your statement that the free world follows the US leadership, I'm
sure it's commonly done - but also - they break free of US hegemony too.

If, for example, over time, the US renames the gulf in question, it may
that we experience a switchover period of confusion, much like "X, formerly known as twitter" did for a while, and it may be that if the Democrats ever
win back the swing states, that they can switch the naming back, but I
suspect what will happen, for a while, is what happened when I was in elementary school for the island of Formosa.

On all the maps when I was a child, the islands were named both Formosa and Taiwan (as the wall maps dated to well before Alaska & Hawaii were states).

Over time, we started seeing the school maps switch from Formosa to Taiwan. Same kind of slow-transformation thing may happen here - what do you think?

    What does this response mean?

    Hi badgolferman,

I laughed out loud when I saw sticks' response, which was rather apropos.
    <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel_Maddow>

Rachel Maddow is a classic anti-Fox-news MSNBC far-left liberal who intones incessantly feeding the masses anti-Trump whataboutism far-left rhetoric.
    <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism>

Whenever someone says "Are grocery prices down", that's a form of ad
hominem attacks because the person saying it can't formulate an adult
argument to the naming of this particular body of water by the US gob'ment.

I'm not sure who said that ad hominem attack, but it probably was Alan
Baker, who, as you know, owns the IQ of a fifth grader - and shows it.

His ad hominem attack to ANYTHING that the USA does is the same.
    It never changes.

But back to Rachel Maddow... as his point of view was spot on perfect.

Essentially, as I understood it, sticks was saying that the childishly
inept whataboutism of "what about grocery prices" misses the point so completely that whoever said it used childish fifth-grade attack logic.

If someone says (or does) something you don't understand - attack them!

Same as Rachel Maddow does when she incessantly drones on about anything possible that she can do to claim a whataboutism that her public loves to
    hear.

BTW, Rachel Maddow is no different than, oh, say, Laura Ingraham, Sean
Hannity or Tucker Carlson in that she caters to the far left as much as
they cater to the far right. (Me? I'm balanced. I think for myself.)

Maybe they're not as craven as the guys at Google.

They got it right now today. Gulf of America

You are one of these mentally handicapped Red Necks:

Many who write follow AP style

Users of the Google map app in the United States will now see the body
of water referred to as the Gulf of America, the company said. Mexican
users would see “Gulf of Mexico.” Elsewhere in the world, Google
identifies it as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

But the AP’s decision is influential because many news outlets and other organizations use it as an arbiter of how to consistently refer to things.

Some larger outlets have their own rules.

—The New York Times said it would continue to use Gulf of Mexico, while noting Trump’s renaming in stories that discuss that issue. The gulf,
which borders Mexico and Cuba as well as the United States, has been
known as the Gulf of Mexico for more than 400 years.

—The Washington Post also said it would use Gulf of Mexico in most
references because it “is not solely within the United States’
jurisdiction and the name of Gulf of America might confuse global readers.”

    *LOL*

A hillbilly is someone from the mountains of Appalachia X like West Virginia, western Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky. A redneck can be from anywhere, even places like California, New York or even Canada. Rednecks
are a higher class than hillbillies.

Always purposefully helpfully striving to add on-topic value...

Since our esteemed Professor Lorenz has so eloquently brought up the
subject, I feel it apropos to observe that, in a sense, both the term
Redneck & Hillbilly generally deprecatingly refer to white, rural,
uneducated working-class people... the Hillbilly hails generally from the Appalachians while the Redneck is more broadly associated with the South.

However, as badgolferman noted, there's no legal restriction on using these endearing words for someone like, oh, maybe me. Since I live in the boonies
of Silicon Valley, I often describe my "redneck repairs" where, in my use,
it's of the sense that the back of my neck is sunburned from the outdoors.

Note: Since I live in California, my pronouns are Me, Myself, and I.

Enjoyed that blog. Loved the spoon on the door handle probably the most.

My redneck repairs are not as elegant. Mine are more like Popsicle sticks around frozen orange juice containers duct taped to a leaky water pipe.

So that we can further edify Professor Lorenz, that's a Redneck repair.
    That's NOT a Hillbilly repair!

A Hillbilly repair of a leaky wooden water pipe would be patched with
layers of moss and squirrel pelts, sealed with sap, and reinforced with
woven grapevines. The water flow will then be regulated by a strategically placed, carved wooden plug, and the whole system is gravity-fed from a
spring higher up the mountain and led to a large oak keg in the basement.

Oh, and the Redneck water pipe is to fill the hot tub.
The Hillbilly water pipe is to cool the whisky still.

In terms of World War II, Americans were fighting their own battles in
the Pacific as opposed to simply poking their noses into other
countries' business (although an American embargo against Japan was one
    of the reasons).
To be fair, WWII would almost certainly have lasted longer or even been
    lost without US participation.

This is about the dumbest thing seen in some time. Nice work.

Here are a few examples of Hollyweird war movies that made up lies to
suit themselves, but there are more.

    - "U-571" (2000)
This is probably the worst. An American submarine crew captures
a German Enigma machine ... WRONG! It was a British submarine
crew that found an Enigma machine.

    - "Enemy at the Gates" (2001)
Russian sniper Vasily Zaytsev embarks on a duel with a German
sniper which, the film implies, changed the course of the
Battle of Stalingrad ... except there is no proof any such
    duel ever took place.

    - "Pearl Harbour" (2001)
Ben Affleck's US Air Force Pilot character joins the RAF Eagle
Squadron. Yes, the RAF Eagle squadron was made of US-born pilots,
but they were not serving US military pilots and most joined the
RAF after going to Canada and technically being Canadians.

    - "The Great Escape" (1963)
Portrays three Americans participating, but in the real event
there was only one American, who later became a British citizen.

    - The Battle of the Bulge" (1965)
This one is so bad that even Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was
involved in the real battle, said it was falsified history!
Among many "errors", it ignores the British forces, uses the
wrong tanks, and omits the battle's turning point by the
    Allied air power.

    - "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (1936)
Not World War I or II, but this movie purposely moved the battle
to a completely different war and different continent to the
    real event!

The ten year plan for the ramp-up means that no country was previously delinquent in meeting their 2% goal until 2025. Yes, this means that all

America has its own budgetary problems and has begun taking actions to address that. Government employees are being reduced and spending is being reduced across the board. We cannot keep pushing the deficit into higher trillions as we have been doing. Trade deficits and foreign military costs are big ticket items which must take the same cuts like the federal government is taking. NATO countries have woken up to the fact that they
must take a bigger burden of defending their own territories than depending on big brother all the time. Here’s an article from a left-leaning publication which describes it better than I can.

    https://www.politico.eu/article/us-recedes-nato-scrambles-find-new-leader-munich-security-conference/

    If it's being "addressed"...

...if DOGE is really dealing with all the "waste"...

...why have the Republicans voted to lift the debt ceiling so much?

Well Said Wilf. The Pendejo Administration is hellbent on turning the
clock back 100 or more years, to a time when oligarchs ran unchecked, eventually plunging the economy into a decades-long Great Depression.

Oh, and there was this World War thingy they tried to teach us about in
    school.

The US system of checks and balances is sure not perfect, but the lessons
we "learned" from the Depression, helped us develop some mechanisms to

It's my understanding that the way we do it is there are fundamentally only
two parties who have any chance of winning, as whenever a third (e.g., Bull Moose) party tries to run, it only dilutes the winning party (e.g., it's
how Woodrow Wilson was elected even without any majority, as I understand).

Having said that, we are stuck with the "platform" of those two parties.
If I simplify their platforms, it shows they don't make any sense.

One platform wants to kill babies but doesn't want kids to be killed.
The other platform wants to save the babies but not to save the kids.

Where is the common sense in that?

What party does someone vote for who wants babies to be subject to capital punishment and who wants the 2nd amendment to not be infringed upon?

In other words, more sweetly stated, there's no part for people who believe
in the 2nd amendment and yet who believe in allowing women to abort babies.

That is why the US are not a democracy.

The US Electoral College is one of those peculiar concepts carved into
our Constitution by Founding Fathers who could not agree on a damn
thing. Some were concerned that the great unwashed populace was just too
stupid to elect a president. So to get the thing ratified, they made compromises, some of which make little sense once the drugs wear off.

As an American, I must accept the [sometimes fact | sometimes

recently been making ugly noises about reviving.

So yes, at this point in history "not reliable" is an understatement.
