    Maybe you didn't this time.

I always lock the phone before placing it in my pocket so I don't know

if somehow I didn't lock the phone before I put it in my pocket how
could it still call different people over and over again?

There are at least two ways that can happen.

    1. Different screen areas being "tapped" as you walk / move.
    2. Silly Siri hearing people's names and thinking you want to call them.

Both is utter nonsense. You are a braindead Troll with even not minimal knowledge about iPhones.

Doesn't the screen require some sort of capacitive touch to select
something? I can't touch it with gloves unless they're designed with
"feelers" going from the glove's surface to my skin. The phone was in
my pocket with cloth separating the screen from my skin.

If the lining is thin enough there's enough capacitance to trigger the screen. If your leg is a bit sweaty that helps.

Sweat or rain making the cloth slightly damp can also increase the
conductivity of thicker cloth. Sometimes when giving our iPad a quick
clean with a damp cloth will trigger things, while the same cloth when
    dry doesn't.

I sometimes get photos triggered in my pocket.

Yep, random photos and the weather app opening were fairly regular on
my mother's mobile phone until she got a phone cover with a front flap.

I mean butt dialing had been a thing for twenty years. Why are you
    surprised it's happened to you?

    Agree. This is very common.

Which is another reason why I have a full, soft, wrap around case on every phone I have ever had. The front is covered. The back is covered. The sides and buttons are covered.

No such shenanigans ever happen to me. I can also drop it on concrete and not put a scratch/dent on the phone.
