    Thanks!

    Most versions of news support a "checkgroups" control message that can
    be used to help keep your active file in sync with the "standard"
    Usenet groups. This newsgroup list is in the format expected by such software.

    Even with the line breaks? For instance:

    --8<-------------------------------------------------------->8---
    comp.compression.research Discussions about data compression
    research. (Moderated)
    --8<-------------------------------------------------------->8---

    Is it accidental or these scripts actually deal okay with these line
    breaks? (Just curious.)

    That line break should not be there. It is not part of the master
    checkgroups file. I'm not sure where it is being introduced....

    Any chance that it's

    doing it? I never used trn. If it's not yours newsreader or text
    editor, then it must the NNTP server. Or is it me somehow?

    The newsreader may add it.

    I see it via GNUS' default (formatted) view but it disappears when
    looking at the raw message.

    There is no chance whatsoever that it's trn. trn doesn't have a built-in
    text editor. The user chooses which text editor is called in the
    composer. Composer input is a minimal set of headers for a root article
    or minimal headers plus quote for a followup. trn performs minimal sanity checks on composer output to verify the presense of required headers. Then there is another process that prepares the proto article for injection,
    which does minimal parsing and checks again for minimal required headers.

    trn does as little as possible. With trn, it's literally the
    responsibility of the user to write an article that complies with
    standards and to prepare an article in a conventional output.

    If the user cannot and will not be responsible for writing a
    conventional article, then use another newsreader.

    Perhaps you might familiarize yourself with the newsreader before
    commenting.

    If you're talking about my newsreader, then no, that's not how the
    checkgroups are posted.

    You're right. It's Gnus indeed. I've never realized it does that.
