However, like all people who are in their comfort zone the media will push back againts fairness.
No wonder we need fringe media - someone has to provide balance.

"I was talking to an American friend while in USA earlier this year. The subject
got around to the political situation in USA, and he enquired about how our political system worked. I went into some detail of what had been happening back home, and with the treaty problems etc, etc.

When I explained how how electoral system worked and the fact we had separate electorate seats for the minority population of maori descent, his reply was
    as follows:

"You really have to be joking. We have fought here, for equal rights for over sixty years, while it looks like your country is going back to black and
white. You're going to have big problems if you don't get real."

By the way, my friend is an American of African descent, and an IT. specialist."

I feel that is how the average Kiwi feels/sees things in NZ. We need to work
on this matter of equal treatment for people. There is a great deal at
    stake.

That sentiment is the main reason that Labour were fired in October so decisively. Yes we need to get rid of all racist norms regardless of their value in isolation from the whole - for instance Maori names only for government departments.
And before someone calls me racist, note that I live in a community which has a far higher percentage of Maori folk than the national average, and we chose to live her and love it - the community is well integrated and most Maori here agree with what I have written here.

I would ignore the American comments (I lived there for 4 years and
found most are not interested in understanding how a Westminster
government work) but not the conclusion. I agree that there is going
to be a period of severe push-back from those who believe that Maori
are being stripped of rights hard-won in recent years. However many
of those pushing back have no Maori in their family tree. There can
be no doubt that some of them will earn the soubriquet of "sunshine"
from Winston Peters (anyone who does this has seriously irritated WP)
    and they will deserve it.

We can take heart that the leaders of the reforms (Seymour and Peters)
are themselves just as much a Maori as any other Maori.
