• The media has a moment of doubt -- but it passes quickly

From Willy Nilly@21:1/5 to All on Tue Apr 23 07:55:58 2024
A hysterical but excruciating article is at https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/mediawatch/audio/2018935168/the-tough-questions-behind-the-media-s-declining-trust

I is about the precipitous drop in the public's confidence in the
media -- down to 33% in the latest survey (although they avoid
mentioning that figure in the article!). The media navel-gazes for a
few seconds, but then exonerates itself totally. Read it if you dare,
but here is the layman's summary:

Media: Why has the public trust in us dropped so far?!? Should we
report facts more fairly? Should we have a broader range of
viewpoints in our editorials?!? Um... naa-a-a-A-A-AAHHH! The
problem isn't us -- it's the public! We simply aren't communicating
our lefty woke viewpoints well enough. We need to up the volume and
intensity until those boorish Neanderthals finally understand our
cosmic truths!! The answer may be to pretend to listen to them.

End of article. Not joking, that's our media.

Your misunderstanding of the programme is profound. Since you appear
to regard Mike Hosking as one of New Zealand's most apolitical and
reliably honest journalists, your credibility may be just a little
    tainted, Tony.

I apologise for the insult, Willy Nilly - I was replying to you rather
    than to Tony.

The real problem is that as money has become tighter we have been
faced with an increasing proportion of our "news" media producing >"advertorials" and opinion pieces - with well financed organisations
such as the "NZ Taxpayer Union" and others fronting for their favoured >parties. We need a clearer separation between journalism and such
opinion pieces, and in case it had missed your limited understanding, >"Editorials" are these days merely an expression of opinion on behalf
    of the media owners . . . .

Media concentration has also meant that most "local" papers are also
merely mouthpieces for their big owners - real local news is much
sparser than it used to be; one of the main benefits from the
contestable fund to NZ media was better (and independent) reporting of
local authority issues, but to our new governing parties the big
priority is reducing government spending to be able to save Nicola
Willis at budget time - tax cuts for the wealthy "Trump" anything else
    for the panicking Cabinet . . . . .

Dropping confidence is leading to many business owners having to face >possible closure, unemployment is heading for over 5%, and interest
rates are expected to rise to give more profit to the banks. The
reality is that the government is taking us down the wrong track - the
only winners are the Atlas Network - in a policy vacuum from Luxon and
his mates, Atlas are selling self-interest to National and NZ First,
and to hell with the rest of New Zealand . . .

As was I - I immediately apologised to Tony for the mistake.
No you apologised to Willy Nilly. You really do need help.
Well done Tony - you are quite correct - that does not happen often!
You are correct, I cannot remember the last time you admitted to a nonsense >post or lie despite the thousands of opportunities you have had.

And a warm fuzzy haze descended onto them, helped along by ample
    flowing Chateaux Cardboarx...

We need to up the volume and >>intensity until those boorish Neanderthals finally understand our
cosmic truths!! The answer may be to pretend to listen to them.

End of article. Not joking, that's our media.
Spot on Willy Nilly - unfortunately that is what the disease causes (that is >the disease called socialism).

I agree Tony - and Willy. The MSM is dependent on advertising revenue generated by exposing their readers to advertising. Because new
technology (Social Media) allows advertising spend to be better
targeted to readers, the MSM are facing tough competition for
advertising spending and they must adapt or die, just like every other business.

A flawed business model is one part of the picture.

MSM readers 'consume' news articles that the MSM publishes. If those
readers no longer trust factual accuracy and/or political neutrality
from article authors then this will inevitably further damage the MSM
business model. Because most MSM members have a declining reader
count advertising revenue will fall regardless of the technology
    challenges.

So the MSM face 2 separate threats to staying in business. Each of
them threatens their business viability but both together greatly
    speeds up terminal business decline.

Indeed. The solution, if there is one, is in the hands of the MSM alone, every time they blame their customers (and this is not the first time) they do themselves more damage because their customers are not stupid. Stuck in a rut, the MSM is self-destructing.
