This issue certainly gives the lie to Simeon Brown's unsupported claim (otherwise known as a political lie) of 'blanket' speed limit
reductions - the "Back to 2019" decision is however certainly a
'blanket' decision - it applies one demand in place of many different
decision in local areas regarding speed limits in their area. In an
area that I am closest to, the Council did a good job of consultation
that resulted in a 30 kph area extending from one side of the local
school for about 400 metres to the other side of a small shopping area
that had suffered through difficult parking and danger using a
pedestrian crossing - the slightly longer 30kph area that resulted
from the survey pleased local businesses by making it easier for
customers to park and then leave again, safer for pedestrians, and
good for business - and school traffic patrol was also easier - they
had at least one car going through the controlled crossing before and
after school each week, and that has stopped. In a nearby suburb, a
small shopping area where a pedestrian had been killed on a pedestrian
crossing some years ago and the then Council had agreed to calls for a restricted (30kph) area - well before 2019, but bizarrely apparently
National are insisting that the 30kph limit in that area also goes up
to 50 kph. So we have a "Blanket" decision made by the National
(party) Transport Minister that over-rides local decisions made by
local Council in conjunction with consultation and requests from local residents. Authoritarian? Yes. "Far Right" Authoritarian? Yes. Simeon
is wielding power just because he has found out he can. He does not
care about local decisionsbing made by Local Councils - he is the
Minister of Local Government, and no matter who local people have
voted for, he is their "little Hitler" - and he will make decisions
    for them.

So we have 9 months to go to get back to the future. I can hear the Left >>leaning folks howling against this decision because that it it is the Far >>right which have done it.
Except there is no far right in this government.
You may not like it, but Simeon Brown is part of this Government . . .
