• Langage at the Waikato hospital

This is another example of the crazy world we live in.

The hospital has ordered that all staff, including the migrant workers shall speak English.

Lets step back here and ask what is the function of language. It is to communicate. If the nurse and the patient have the same first language then
why not have the conversation in that language. The risk of something
getting "lost in translation" is removed.

I agree with the Doctor sited in the article who said it was clearly aimed
at Indian, Filipino and Pasifika nurses, who were healthcare "heroes" but
    were now being victimised.

Once again the migrant nurses are holding the ship together and getting
kicked in the guts just because they speak their native language.

You may have missed the Minister of Health saying that he agrees with you. The hospital has now pulled back, as they should.

What typically happens is that non-English-speakers disparage their
boss to eachother, in that boss's presence, who cannot understand
them. The hospital's stance was exactly right. Another example of
the "stupid party" letting the media dictate policy to them.

A good article, that fairly covered the issues. I do feel sorry for Dr
Reti who looked most uncomfortable "clarifying" policies while having
to be very careful not to offend those that had made the racist
"complaints" that had resulted in the edict, or to offend the racist
ACT Party which remains effectively in charge of government.
Interesting that the NZ Free Speech Union has made no comment about
the issue - they of course purportedly exist to encourage everyone to
accept that anyone should be able to say whatever they want, however
offensive - but behind that facade, they exist to support the ACT
party being heard - when it comes to a choice between offensive
behaviour and the interests of the ACT party, they wisely stay silent.

So far so good Rich - on topic even though your assertion about ACT is laughable given the history of Labour governments that included the
Alliance, NZ First and the Greens. When it comes to "racist" parties
you forgot to mention the Maori Party.

That comment is totally off topic and typical of how you introduce irrelevancies to a thread. You don't seem to understand when you

Not off topic at all. Being able to communicate effectively is
important in our health services, and we have many staff and patients
for whom English is not their first language. Some patients may need explanations in their native language to best understand, and it is
useful when staff are available to have such discussions - and the
same can be true for discussions between staff. Free Speech is not
just about the right to give political opinions, it makes legitimate communicating in the best way possible. Sometimes that will mean that
some in a group will not be able to understand - and that is one good
reason why we have some tests for new staff in our health system that
they have a certain level of proficiency in English - it is the
language most New Zealanders know. But to try and prevent discussion
in other languages is a free speech issue - an organisation purporting
to exist to defend Free Speech could be expected to express a view,
    but they have not . . . .

This is another example of the crazy world we live in.

The hospital has ordered that all staff, including the migrant workers shall
    speak English.

Lets step back here and ask what is the function of language. It is to >>>>communicate. If the nurse and the patient have the same first language then >>>>why not have the conversation in that language. The risk of something >>>>getting "lost in translation" is removed.

I agree with the Doctor sited in the article who said it was clearly aimed >>>>at Indian, Filipino and Pasifika nurses, who were healthcare "heroes" but >>>>were now being victimised.

Once again the migrant nurses are holding the ship together and getting >>>>kicked in the guts just because they speak their native language.

A good article, that fairly covered the issues. I do feel sorry for Dr >>>Reti who looked most uncomfortable "clarifying" policies while having
to be very careful not to offend those that had made the racist >>>"complaints" that had resulted in the edict, or to offend the racist
ACT Party which remains effectively in charge of government.

So far so good Rich - on topic even though your assertion about ACT is >>laughable given the history of Labour governments that included the >>Alliance, NZ First and the Greens. When it comes to "racist" parties
you forgot to mention the Maori Party.

Interesting that the NZ Free Speech Union has made no comment about
the issue - they of course purportedly exist to encourage everyone to >>>accept that anyone should be able to say whatever they want, however >>>offensive - but behind that facade, they exist to support the ACT
party being heard - when it comes to a choice between offensive
behaviour and the interests of the ACT party, they wisely stay silent.

That comment is totally off topic and typical of how you introduce >>irrelevancies to a thread. You don't seem to understand when you
should start a new thread rather than attempting to hi-jack an
    existing thread.

Not off topic at all. Being able to communicate effectively is
important in our health services, and we have many staff and patients
for whom English is not their first language.

I was referring to your comments about the NZFSU as being off-topic.

    Some patients may need
explanations in their native language to best understand, and it is
useful when staff are available to have such discussions - and the
same can be true for discussions between staff. Free Speech is not
just about the right to give political opinions, it makes legitimate >communicating in the best way possible. Sometimes that will mean that
some in a group will not be able to understand - and that is one good
reason why we have some tests for new staff in our health system that
they have a certain level of proficiency in English - it is the
language most New Zealanders know. But to try and prevent discussion
in other languages is a free speech issue - an organisation purporting
to exist to defend Free Speech could be expected to express a view,
    but they have not . . . .

The policy was cancelled as soon as Dr Reti was made aware of it:
