Normally, the warning “Read the fine print!” is to tell buyers to
beware of traps when dealing with sellers. But here’s a case where the
seller (a rental car company) didn’t properly clarify terms in in its
own contract.
A tourist rents a car, forgets which side of the road to drive on, and
crashes within minutes of picking up the vehicle. The rental company
declines to provide a replacement vehicle, deciding (quite reasonably,
one would think) that this customer is not a good risk. But then they
don’t want to refund the cost of the rental. Their own contract is not
clear on what the rules are in this case, so the tribunal gives the
customer the benefit of the doubt, and orders a refund.
