You might or might not remember that bout of violence involving
football fans in Amsterdam last November. Certain groups were quick to
claim it as an instance of “anitsemitism”, saying among other things
that a particular piece of video footage showed local Palestinian
immigrants attacking visiting Maccabi supporters from Israel.
In fact, it was nothing of the sort. It was the Israelis who had
attacked Palestinians.
TVNZ took the initial Reuters report at face value, but failed to
follow up when the source news agency later issued a correction.
The Broadcasting Standards Authority upheld a complaint about this
negligence from John Minto of the Palestine Solidarity Network
Aotearoa. The report <

ends with:
No further action was ordered, with the Authority determining
publication of its findings was enough to acknowledge the error,
censure the broadcaster and provide guidance to the wider
industry.
So there won’t be a correction read out as part of the evening
bulletin. TVNZ was not alone in its offending: if you hadn’t come
across a followup like this, you might likely not even be aware that
the incident was widely misreported at the time.
