Small detail, her visa had expired. Therefore she was illegally in the
country. Nevertheless the USA's response seems over the top. A few questions
as to why she had not renewed the visa along with a background check to see that she was honest, along with a bit of common sense would have been win

Agreed. Bottom line is she blew it and to do so in the current Trump climate is really silly. When in Rome applies.
