    Because the characters were much more like real people (even in SF, comedy, ect) than the PC spins on people today.

    Too many modern movies (and TV shows) are simply "reboots" of older
    things, where they have made lots of idiotic changes, usually to
    appease the "Politically Correct" nutters and/or satisfy the new
    maker's ego.

    There's also the massive franchises, where they keep releasing a new
    movie / TV series in the same "universe". The result is often
    "franchise fatigue" where supposedly the fans have got bored with it,
    but the reality is that it is more usually the writers who simply
    haven't got any sensible new ideas ... at which point they lazily
    "reboot" the whole thing from the start again.

    For me modern movies seem to want to persuade people that the cinema
    experience is better than home. So movies are geared to show off the
    latest sound and image technology. So sitting in the cinema you're
    constantly bombarded with sound, not a single moment can be silent.

    Story replaced with special effects....
    Algorithmic movie layout....
    blah blah blah....

    It's also due to the ever decereasing human attention span, which is
    why American TV shows are often full of car chases, gun/fist fights, explosions, etc.
