• What Did You Watch? 2025-02-12 (Wednesday)

    From Ian J. Ball@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 13 07:40:33 2025
Yesterday, I worked in the morning, and ran errands in the afternoon,
but still had enough time to get through soaps, and to binge a couple
    more episodes of "Paradise":

soaps: DOOL - Joy confronts Alex about getting back together with
Stephanie, and gets Alex to admit it though never lets him explain what actually happened, and them kicks him out of her room - it will be
incredibly dumb if the show doesn't have Joy leave town over this... The
new "Sophia" debuts, and this was even rougher than I was expecting -
beyond the new actress clearly being nervous, she has none of the
twinkling malevolence of the old Sophia - I would love to know what
happened with the original actress, Madelyn Kientz, as she was superior
in every way (except for being tiny), and if the show fired her, they're idiots!... Anyway, NuSophia's plan to get a couple to adopt goes up in
smoke (and now they seem to be heading in the direction of Johnny and
Chanel adopting the baby!). Holly commiserates with Doug III, and Tate
catches them... Oh, and the hospital is about to go bankrupt, and
Stephanie is trying to prevent that from happening on Kayla's behalf.
Y&R - Mon's ep. Mostly not that interesting. Victor refuses to
accept Kyle, and Claire tries to change his mind. Kyle's son clearly
seems to be conspiring to try to get Kyle and Summer back together.
Sharon continues to act just as crazy as before (IMO), coming over to
Adam's and Chelsea's, pretty much accusing Chelsea of getting back
together with Adam, and gushing in an almost unhinged way about Nick.
GH - Tue's ep. This was decent. After making another public scene,
Sahsa throws a drink in Cody's face, and storms out; after that, Felicia
talks Cody down. Then Sahsa meets with Jason, and gets him to agree to
not to contradict the "Jason is the father of Sasha's baby" story though
he demands to tell Danny the truth. Danny finds out where Cyrus is, and publicly confronts him about killing Sam, just as Jason arrives to
intervene. Nina tries to convince Willow that Drew is the real problem,
and Nina is just about to admit her affair with Drew at the end of the
episode (which means she will surely get interrupted before doing so
    next episode).

    Paradise (Hulu) - Ep's #3 & #4. Reddit was all saying how "episode #2
was a letdown, but episode #3 was so much better", but I don't think
that was true at all - the best part about episode #3 was giving
Sterling K. Brown a chance to shine; but otherwise, I thought it was on
par with ep #2. But episode #4 I thought was much better, finally
    delivering some answers.
    Some
    Spoilers
    Likely
    I
    Guess...
Ep. #3: "The Architect of Social Well-Being" - Most of this episode
was Brown's Xavier trying to get Sarah Shahi's Dr. Gabriela to explain
her angle, while Garbiela tries to psychologically probe Xavier about
why he was estranged from his late father - in the end, Gabriela trusts
Xavier to find out who really killed the President, and warns him about
Billy Pace (as per the President). Meanwhile, it's revealed that
Xavier's buddy Billy Pace and his affair-mate Jane were the ones who
disable the security cameras, ostensibly so they could "play with
President Bradford's stuff", like his video game system - this seems to
clear them of killing the President. (Or does it?...)
Ep. #4: "Agent Billy Pace" - This ep is all about Billy Pace's
backstory (though it's never explicitly explained how he ended up on the President's security detail), and whether he can really be trusted, in
light of Pres. Bradford's warning about him. This does reveal an
important point about the overall "meta" storyline, something I think
several of us suspected. However, the "twist ending" was ruined by the
show's cast listing - when one person is main cast, and the other isn't,
you know exactly how this was going to play out. And, as such, we
probably now know who killed Pres. Bradford, and this episode pretty
clearly lays out the probable "why" as well.

    What did you watch?

    I watched:

Babylon 5 (blu-ray) - "Sleeping in Light" - Series finale - Set about
20 years after Sheridan left to run the alliance from Minbar, everyone
returns to say goodbye when it's time for Sheridan to die. This was
actually a lot better than I remembered. One thing however, instead of
going with one of their usual directors they brought in a first time
director to direct the finale and this guy decided to insert himself
into the episode at the end to literally turn the lights off on the
station. Couldn't they have gotten someone of some importance to turn
    the lights off? ;-)

Well, there's no way the hospital (which I learned for the first time in
these episodes is named "Salem University Hospital"!!) is not going to
be a part of the show, so this is going to be favorably resolved one way
or the other. (My theory is that either Xander & NuPhilip, or EJ, will
throw money at the hospital to save it...)

    What did you watch?

    Hey, thanks for asking!

I watched PARADISE episode five. It gets worse.

I tried to watch the new episode of SHIFTING GEARS, which on Tuesday said
it would premiere Wednesday and then on Wednesday it said it would premiere
at 3 AM Thursday and I still haven’t seen it

And I watched something for which a full write up is forthcoming.

I've been enjoying the show. Sure, there are holes in the plot but
overall it's been an enjoyable ride. It also helps that the show isn't
intended to last for many seasons.

US ARMY PROBLEMS ARE WORSE THAN YOU THOUGHT!:
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the U.S. military have become both a point of significant policy focus and a subject of intense debate. Here's an overview:

    Policy and Implementation:
Diversity: The military has long recognized the benefits of a diverse force, not just in terms of race, gender, and ethnicity, but also in skills, experiences, and perspectives. This diversity is seen as crucial for understanding and operating in global environments.
Equity: Efforts here focus on ensuring that all service members have equal access to opportunities, whether in promotions, training, or assignments.
This includes addressing systemic barriers that might prevent equitable treatment.
Inclusion: The aim is to create an environment where all members feel valued, respected, and part of the team, which can enhance morale, cohesion, and ultimately combat effectiveness.

    Initiatives and Programs:
The Department of Defense (DoD) has established offices like the Defense Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion to oversee and promote these values.
Training programs on unconscious bias, cultural competency, and leadership in diverse teams are increasingly common.
Recruitment strategies have been adjusted to reach a broader demographic, including targeted campaigns for underrepresented groups.

    Controversies and Criticisms:
Readiness vs. Social Policies: Critics, often from conservative viewpoints, argue that focusing on DEI detracts from the military's primary mission of readiness and combat effectiveness. They express concerns over lowered standards or "woke" policies.
Perception and Morale: Some service members and analysts worry that an overemphasis on DEI might alienate traditional recruits or create divisions within the ranks.
Effectiveness Debate: There's ongoing discussion about whether these initiatives truly enhance military capability or if they're more symbolic. Studies vary on the impact, with some suggesting better team performance with diversity, while others highlight potential morale issues.

    Supporters' Viewpoints:
Advocates argue that a diverse and inclusive military better reflects
national demographics, potentially attracting more talent and improving international relations and operations.
They assert that DEI initiatives ensure that all service members can
contribute to their fullest potential, which is vital for complex, modern warfare where cultural understanding is key.

    Current Status:
The DoD continues to integrate DEI into its mission, balancing these efforts with traditional military values like discipline and unit cohesion. The
success or failure of these policies is still under scrutiny, with outcomes likely to influence military policy for years to come.

This debate reflects broader societal discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion, highlighting the military's role not just as a fighting force but
as a microcosm of American society.

Maybe not for you, but it might be for Arthur.

I've been enjoying the show. Sure, there are holes in the plot but
overall it's been an enjoyable ride. It also helps that the show isn't intended to last for many seasons.

    SPOILERS BELOW

I'm having a problem with the outside apocalypse. From the data the president pulled up on his special iPad, apparently global warming caused the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica to melt enough that the decreased weight on the earth's crust allowed volcanoes to erupt that had been "plugged" by the weight of the ice, including a heretofore undiscovered super-volcano under the Antarctic ice. This then melted all the ice that was left, which inundated the earth and turned it into Waterworld. We're treated to several shots of just
the tip of the Washington Monument obelisk sticking up above the waves, which means the world's oceans have risen not just the seven inches that even the most dire Warmists predict, but over 500 feet.

The problem with that is that even if you melted every bit of ice on the
planet and condensed every drop of water out of the air, there's not enough water on earth to account for that kind of inundation. So where did all this extra water come from? And does this mean that in addition to being in a huge bunker underground, there's a massive ocean above them, too? Where are they getting their air?

And none of this explains why the team they sent up to explore was talking about intense levels of radiation. Where did *that* come from? Was there a nuclear war in addition to a flooding catastrophe? And if so, why is the Washington Monument still standing?

So the apparent explosion we saw from the plane in the pilot was
actually a volcano erupting? Okay... Yeah, the rise in the oceans is
    crazy.

That said even if all that happened it didn't fit with the shots we
got of the four that went outside and were killed by Billy. That
showed a cold world with radiation which fit with the idea of a
nuclear winter. If that was happening then the ice couldn't have
    melted.

No, they clearly wouldn't have that problem. Remember they are inside
a mountain. Further we saw the two kids head into their equivalent of
the aerodrome in San Francisco with all the planes in storage. That is
clearly just a shelter that opens into the air. So the place was built
into a mountain well above sea level.
(Clearly no one bothered to make it all fit together. The shot of the
airplane storage facility clearly suggest the air is fine to breathe
and that there was plenty of sunshine coming through the windows.
Which goes against what the four found with a gloomy cold outside.
Which goes against a world where all of the ice has melted.)

Oh, you ask about where the water came from. There's been talk about
huge pockets of water stored deep underwater. So maybe that water was
freed as the volcanoes erupted and the land settled. lol.

Yeah, what we saw in the pilot from the plane window made me think
there was a nuclear war. As that explosion we saw from the window sure
looked like the effect of a nuclear explosion.

located? I figured in the Rockies somewhere and the outdoor scene was
just a regional blizzard and not indicating the entire world was like that.

That actually fits with The early scene where the murderous billionaire
lady tries to recruit the bug fuck crazy Daniel Jackson analog, and he’s raving about all these different completely unrelated catastrophes that are going to happen all at once.

Oh, you ask about where the water came from. There's been talk about

That’s exactly what happens in that stupid shark movie, below Paris?,
A.k.a. “Sharks Eat Everybody at the French Olympics and Nobody Cares
Because Everybody Hates the French and the Olympics”

They accidentally punched a hole in the bottom of the Seine river and it
let all the gigatons of water that hides beneath the surface of the Earth
come flooding up and leave the Earth underwater without even going back
    where it came from.

And then the freshwater sharks which apparently operate equally well in seawater start replicating like Tribbles and swim over, and eat Florida.

And none of this explains why the team they sent up to explore was talking >> about intense levels of radiation. Where did *that* come from? Was there a >> nuclear war in addition to a flooding catastrophe? And if so, why is the
    Washington Monument still standing?

Same reason the St. Louis arch is even though there’s a huge hole in the
    top of it.

Yeah, what we saw in the pilot from the plane window made me think
there was a nuclear war. As that explosion we saw from the window sure
looked like the effect of a nuclear explosion.
