• What Happened to Santa Monica, California?

From BTR1701@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 23 19:09:15 2025
The Santa Monica Pier and the 3rd Street Promenade are (or, more accurately, used to be) some of the top tourist attractions in the L.A. area. Well, after years of the government allowing vagrants and criminals to do whatever they want, this is what it’s like now. Santa Monica is now rated by the FBI as the most dangerous city in California. Over half the businesses have shuttered and the thriving, crowded tourist attraction that it once was is now a ghost town. And for some reason, the mayor and the city council think this is great.

It sounds like your politicians are in a desperate race to the bottom
and succeeding beyond their wildest dreams. I truly don't understand how
people can vote for politicians like that. Someone with a brain needs to
study this phenomenon to try to understand how voters get into this
mentality. Then maybe they can figure out how to snap voters out of it.

More likely, LA will just have to hit rock bottom before people finally
realize how toxic and self-destructive their politicians are.

One would think the residents of Santa Monica, who are seeing the value of their property plummet as they become known as California's ghetto would waste no time in making it clear to the mayor and city council that things need to radically change or they'll all be looking for new jobs. But it seems like wokeness takes precedence over all with these people.

Our local politicians aren't like that but simply don't know how to
say no - which given there are always more potential worthwhile
projects than dollars makes it easy to blow the budget.

In our area we have a new tertiary treatment (they were going for
secondary but Ottawa mandated tertiary but didn't provide any funds -
I suppose Quebec got all the available $$$) with the result the
project is heavily over budget to the tune of local taxpayers getting
a $ 700 / year surcharge on their utility bills for the next 20 years
over and above tax increases well above inflation.

(Strange - that photo is the mayor of the neighboring municipality who
shares the plant and their mayor is convinced she knows me as (a) her
late father was my senior year vice principal in high school and (b)
her father was later principal of the high school my mother taught at
    for 10+ years)
