• [OT] Doug Ford re-elected in Ontario

From Rhino@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 27 22:36:52 2025
In case anyone's wondering about the result of the Ontario election that
was held today, Doug Ford's Progressive Conservatives have won a strong majority again, making this his 3rd consecutive mandate.

Ford called the election over a year early, ostensibly to have a strong
mandate to deal with Trump's tariffs but probably also to prevent new (provincial) Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie from gaining any momentum.
(It appears that Crombie failed to win a seat meaning the Liberals may
need to find another new leader.)

Ford actually lost a few seats compared to the last election but still
has approximately twice as many seats as the remaining parties put
    together.

Of course the election that will be far more important to Canada's
future will be the next federal election. The new leader of the federal
Liberal Party will be chosen on March 9 and the rumour mill suggests
that the next federal election will follow in very short order so that
the Liberals can take advantage of the momentum they've gained by
ousting Trudeau and being in the news due to the leadership race.

I can only hope my fellow Canadians sober up in the coming weeks and
realize that the Liberal Party under a new leader will be every bit as
bad as the Liberal Party under Trudeau - and very possible worse -
because it's essentially the same clown posse with the same horrific ideas.

I think Carney would be the worst of the lot. His Net Zero
fetish will sink the economy with or without tariffs, plus
lower the living standard of most Canadians.

And his French is *really* bad. Maybe that'll be enough of
the Quebec contingent to turn away from him.

Freeland's little girl voice has been heard all to often
parroting Trudeau (until recently), so that might be enough
for the Libs to deep-six her as leader.

The rest? No one really stands out, and all would be more
of the same, with different shadings of the lib agenda.

I'm south of the border, so I'll just sit back and enjoy
    the catfights. ;)

The Liberals have been absolutely AWFUL since Trudeau became their
leader. Swapping him out for Carney or Freeland (or any of the other contenders) will change NOTHING for the better. But somehow, the
leadership campaign for Trudeau's replacement, has brought the Liberals
back into contention, or so say the polls. It will be beyond appalling
if the Liberals somehow seduce the electorate into giving them another
majority (or even another minority with the likes of the NDP enabling
    them).

I dunno - I'm not at all convinced either of those two would have single-handedly doubled the size of the combined national deficits
going back to the foundation of the country - which until modern times
was largely based on wartime spending.

Which is what Justin Trudeau did. His father wasn't averse to deficit
budgets but nothing remotely on the scale of his son. With Justin it
REALLY embarasses me to say that his parents were married about 3
    miles from where I live.
