• What Did You Watch? 2025-03-08 (Saturday)

    From Ian J. Ball@21:1/5 to All on Sun Mar 9 10:33:54 2025
Sorry this is late today - it's a combination of the switch to Daylight
Savings Time and me deciding to run errands this morning (to beat the
    crowd, thanks to DST!!).

Yesterday, I largely played a video game and did some chores, but I also
got through soaps, and a couple of Lifetime flicks I had recorded earlier:

    soaps: Y&R - Tue's and Wed's ep's. Largely concerned Sharon and
Filis[sic!] being held captive together and bickering, while Nick,
Summer and Daniel, and Billy, try to figure out what happened to Sharon
and Filis... Meanwhile, Victor and Adam tip their hands when they reveal
that they know Billy is launching a new company - I wonder if Jack will
now figure out that Victor has planted moles in Chabot?
GH - Fri's ep. This ep was mostly disappointing, except for the
scenes with Lulu and Brook Lynn - NuNuLulu confronts Brook Lynn about
not telling Dante for two decades that they had a child together,
revealing to Brook Lynn for the first time that it was a son: Amanda
Setton was good in these scenes (it feels like she's rarely called on to
really "act" on this show!); at the end, Lulu tells Brook Lynn to tell
Dante, or she will... The semi-good parts were Josslyn being trained in
the ways of being a "spy" (or an "assassin"?!!) by a handler... The rest
of this was Sonny, or Alexis, or Carly and NuJack Brennan drama that I
don't really care about - though on the Alexis front, it feels like Jenz Sidwell is setting up to frame Alexis for some crime (maybe, murder?!!).

golf - Only saw a few minutes of the Arnold Palmer. I will probably
watch it more closely today, on the final day.

Then I watched a couple of Lifetime flicks I had recorded:

Date at Your Own Risk (recorded in mid-Feb) - I really didn't care for
this flick at all. It went exactly where you expected it to, with its
feints and red herrings being totally unconvincing. I wasn't even giving
it my full attention, and I was still easily able to follow along.

The Perfect Killer (recorded on March 1) - I liked this one a lot
better. It had a literal(!) cast of thousands as suspects, and largely
kept me guessing until near the end.
I did think they could have "gone for it" more with this one - I was
really hoping the stepmom (JaNae Armogan) was in on it, but it's very
rare for a Lifetime flick to "go there", so it's not like I was
    expecting it.
In this one, a married couple apparently get a frantic call from the husband's daughter (Laura Provensano, who just did her first Lifetime
flick a few months ago, and has already knocked out this one and a third Lifetime flick coming up since then!). But it's a fake "AI" call, to
lure the father to a location where he is clearly premeditatively murdered.
Coincidentally(?), at about this same time, the girl's estranged
mother (recent Lifetime staple Kirsten Comerford), who had lost all
visitation rights a decade before, shows up as its the girl's 16th
birthday and she can now legally contact the daughter.
So, who killed the dad?! - Did the estranged mom kill the dad for preventing her from seeing the daughter for a decade? Did the stepmom do
it? Perhaps it was the father's business partner? Or was it someone
else, as plenty have motive when the secrets start tumbling out!!
Like I said, this was a pretty good thriller/mystery, as it least it
took a while to figure out who the killer was.

It was at this time that I realized that I had earlier failed to record Lifetime's "Lethal Desire" last month, and it's not airing any time
soon, nor is it on OnDemand! Luckily, I can still watch it off the
Lifetime website, so I will probably do that today.

    What did you watch?

    What did you watch?

    I watched:

    9-1-1 - "Sob Stories" - Season 8, episode 9. During this episode a man
calls 9-1-1 threatening to kill himself, and the operator tells him to
go ahead to do it. The man worries that maybe if he does kill himself,
he won't get into heaven, but the operator assures him that an exception
will be made and he'll still get into heaven. I have the feeling this
episode was written by someone going through some serious relationship
issues and this is their way of venting.

The Hateful Eight (blu-ray) 2015 movie written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. This was his 8th film. The movie stars a cast of Tarantino regulars including Sam L. Jackson as a veteran of the Civil War.
Jackson's character runs into an old bounty hunter friend played by Kurt Russell, and Russel is transporting a criminal (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to
be executed. But thanks to a snow storm they are all forced to hold
over at a store with several others (including Tim Roth, Michael Madsen,
Bruce Dern, and Walton Goggins). But someone isn't who they appear to
be and sudden there's a murder that needs to be solved. But this is a Tarantino movie so it's less solved and more shoot first and ask
    questions later.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (4K disc) 2019 movie written and directed
by Quentin Tarantino. The movie features an all star cast of Tarantino regulars, including DiCaprio as a fading Hollywood star in the 60s, with
Bradd Pitt as DiCaprio's friend and stuntman, navigate life in Hollywood
with the Charles Manson cult lurking in the background. Margot Robbie
also stars as Sharon Tate. I haven't watched this since I saw it I the theater. I have been eagerly looking forward to watching it again, but
forgot just how violent it got towards the end. I had to look away at
some of the more graphic scenes.

Not here. I adjust the clock on my stove, and a clock radio. I have to
get to the one on the video player sometime today. And the one in my car.

What clocks aren't networked around here? Clock in the tv monitor but
that loses time with every power glitch. Thermostat. Fake antique bar
wall clock. Stove. Microwave. Refrigerator. (Why does the refrigerator
need a clock?) Intercom control panel with built-in radio and room
speaker system, which is decades old and the sound is scratchy so it's
not used but if removed would leave a hole. One vehicle has both a clock
on the dashboard and a networked clock that's part of the navigation
system that must be manually switched to displaying daylight time; I
    have no idea why.

The clock that receives the short wave time signal maintains time but
must have missed the code to display daylight time. These clocks display
the pre-set offset from Greenwich that's a fixed offset on every
calendar day except the day of transition. There's a two-byte code to
tell the cloc to make transition at 2 am on the affected day. If I
ignore it it will certainly display the desired offset tomorrow.

So many years ago, I put these newfangled atomic clocks in just about every room of mom’s house and her House had a lot of rooms. And we waited to see what happened to come daylight saving time. Well, they changed just like we were on mountain time. So I had to go in and change them all an hour, which
was a real pain because they were those funky Asian things where you have
to push three buttons in sequence and hold them down for two seconds to activate the third sequence to make something go back one.

Then two weeks later the good folks in Pueblo Colorado figured out they
were doing it wrong and sent out the signal to correct it and I had to go
back and change every goddamn clock again.

And then six months later do it all again.

That lasted a couple of years and I threw the damn things away.

    What did you watch?

    Hey, thanks for asking!

    DEATH IN PARADISE
That nastiest bitch of all bitches, the bitch officer Curtis, is bitchier
than ever this week. The boss cop is examining evidence and she says she
has a report and he tells her to go ahead and she actually snarls at him
like he’s a three year old and tells him he’s to look at her when she’s talking to him, and she doesn’t have anything that he needs to see she’s just telling him that two of the suspects know each other. What a nasty
fucking bitch! I really hope they’re gearing up for something absolutely terrible to happen to her and it can’t be too soon.

Meanwhile, the commissioners replacement arrives and it all goes down completely differently than they told us it was going to. I don’t know if this week’s writer didn’t bother to watch the previous episode or what. They had told us that they weren’t gonna have a boss on the island at all, and instead, this rich creep shows up in a super expensive sports car and
moves into headquarters and tells the murder squad he’ll be meeting with
them every Wednesday to figure out how to cut the fat. Hopefully Officer
Curtis is the fat and he cuts her.

The mystery relied on a bunch of complete random chance happenings, and
there were several false leads that made no sense whatsoever.

I mostly caught up on my backlog of PASSWORD episodes. They’re in random order across decades so the big prize money varies from $300-$30,000! The
last one I watched the sailor won $650 and said now he could put a new roof
    on his house.

The best players are all women. June Lockhart is brilliant. So is Agatha Moorehead and of course Betty White rocks.

I didn't realize today was DST. I was wondering why I slept in so late.
I miss the old days when you had to manually adjust all the clocks.
At least then you knew it was daylight savings. Now it just sort of
    happens automatically without warning.

So many years ago, I put these newfangled atomic clocks in just about every room of mom’s house and her House had a lot of rooms. And we waited to see what happened to come daylight saving time. Well, they changed just like we were on mountain time. So I had to go in and change them all an hour, which was a real pain because they were those funky Asian things where you have
to push three buttons in sequence and hold them down for two seconds to activate the third sequence to make something go back one.

Then two weeks later the good folks in Pueblo Colorado figured out they
were doing it wrong and sent out the signal to correct it and I had to go back and change every goddamn clock again.

And then six months later do it all again.

That lasted a couple of years and I threw the damn things away.

    What did you watch?

    Was it love Hewitt?

Yes. I was trying to avoid spoilers, but the kill yourself 9-1-1
operator wasn't a guess star or some random background extra, it was one
of the main leads of the show.

The Hateful Eight (blu-ray) 2015 movie written and directed by Quentin
Tarantino. This was his 8th film. The movie stars a cast of Tarantino
regulars including Sam L. Jackson as a veteran of the Civil War.
Jackson's character runs into an old bounty hunter friend played by Kurt
Russell, and Russel is transporting a criminal (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to
be executed. But thanks to a snow storm they are all forced to hold
over at a store with several others (including Tim Roth, Michael Madsen,
Bruce Dern, and Walton Goggins). But someone isn't who they appear to
be and sudden there's a murder that needs to be solved. But this is a
Tarantino movie so it's less solved and more shoot first and ask
    questions later.

I saw about half of this, I think the extra long version, and then it
expired on the streamer I was watching and I never did find my way back to it. Should I try?

Yes. It's a good movie. I like all of the movies written and directed
by Tarantino. But if I had to rank them all, I'd probably rank this 7
or 8 out of 9. So it's not as good as his other movies, but Tarantino
sets a pretty high bar and even his worse movies are better than
average. Keep in mind this is basically a bottle movie with a lot of
talking. Not much more than that until the end. Think Reservoir Dogs
    set in the 1880s.

I don't hate the movie the way others do. But one thing I learned
recently was the movie was made during a writer's strike. That
obviously doesn't make the movie any better, but it may help explain why certain obvious problems may not have been fixed.

    https://pagesix.com/2024/12/02/entertainment/daniel-craig-says-this-james-bond-was-a-f-king-nightmare-with-a-terrible-script/

Right before the last writer's strike someone posted a list of all the
movies and show that came out during the one before and suddenly a lot
started to click. "Quantum of Solace" was on that list.

That doesn't explain the frenetic editing. Could I also point out that
the script itself ripped off one of Jackie Chan's lousier movies, The
Tuxedo, a James Bond spoof. Therefore, that script could not be saved.

Howeverk the editing is what absolutely sucks all entertainment value
out of the movie that the script is a lesser problem.

That's actually kind of funny because among all the disc extras for the
movie was the information that the director and Craig largely "wrote"
the script between the two of them with a lot of ad-lib during filming.
So if he didn't like the script he has to share some of the blame.

Do you still have that list handy? Might be fun to take a look...

Unfortunately not. But I found some articles that talk about it:

    https://www.unilad.com/film-and-tv/news/oscars-rules-movies-must-follow-nominations-132368-20250225

    https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/writers-strike-2007-2008-wga-change-tv-breaking-bad-the-office-friday-night-lights-1234727839/

    https://collider.com/writers-strike-movies-ruined-explained/

I just recall seeing both "Heroes" and "Lost" on the list and thinking
the strike murdered "Heroes" because it had been a great show then
suddenly it was horrible, then canceled. I also made note that
"Transformers" Revenge of the Fallen" was on the list because that movie
was particularly bad for no good reason. When you look at the list,
things just start to click, hey there's X-Men Origins, and so many other
shows and movies that started out good then were suddenly awful.

I don't think I paid much attention to the 2008 strike beyond a vague awareness. So when the quality of shows started to dip, I didn't put
two and two together. But this time around, the writers and actors made
sure everyone knew what was up thanks to social media. I was also going
to conventions which had actors and writers talking about the strike so
it was so much more in the forefront of my mind this time around.

We've long known that you communists in Arizona refuse to go along with the
DST program, but I just found out the schizophrenia is even worse than previously suspected.

There's an entire chunk of northeast Arizona that *does* do DST, but within that chunk, there's another segment that *doesn't* do DST.

You'd need a TARDIS to travel from Colorado southwest through Arizona with all the time-traveling you'd be doing.

Yes. Because of the nested Indians, it’s possible to change time zones
seven times just driving along or something.

The only reason Big Daddy hasn't signed an executive order to make DST permanent is because he favors getting rid of DST permanently. He
claims it's "50/50" in public opinion, when polls have shown him wrong.

Actually that's one of the few (very few) things I agree with him on.
Either quit moving the clocks forward every spring or (better yet) just
    leave everything as it is.

Only a big baby gets upset because they lose an hour of sleep once a
year and it "messes up their routine." Or it takes them a few minutes
    to adjust any non-atomic clocks.
