They show reruns of KUNG FU but they’re just absolutely covered with warnings.

Why? What are they warning about?

    How about Star Trek: TOS?

I've been rewatching those in recent weeks and the other day, I found
myself squirming a bit during the Miri episode where Kirk is remarking
on Miri becoming a young woman and an attractive one at that. Although
Kim Darby was apparently 22 during the filming of that episode, her
character was supposed to be just entering puberty....

Norman Lear adapted that from Till Death Do Us Part, which aired on BBC1
in the mid 1960s. I've seen clips of that. Archie ain't half as
outrageous as Alf Garnett, quite frankly. But that was an era in which,
despite network pressure to keep it toned down (and it did get toned
down after the first season), P.C. was in your face. Archie was the clown. Norman Lear wanted his colleged-educated audience to feel good about
themselves by feeling superior to this degenerate who was obviously a
lesser man due to a lack of edumacation. Archie only raised a family,
    despite a changing world.

    Didn't need no welfare state
    Everybody pulled his weight

It's the difference between hatred and discrimination. Archie got blamed
for running his mouth but it's not like Archie himself wrote CCRs and
laws enforcing segretation. Archie was there to take the blame for
everything that was wrong with society, despite his powerlessness.

Lear knew his lilly-white college educated audience that lived in brand
new lilly-white suburbs that attracted families that wouldn't consider
living in cities. The early '70s had an excessive level of urban
    violence, much worse than today.

Thanks to fictional Archie, they didn't have to question their own
attitudes and the extent to which their own fear was also an expression
of racism. Yeah, Norman Lear knew how to exploit an audience.

On a similar vein addressing stereotypes, remember Norm (Norm!)
pretending to be gay on an episode of Cheers to gain an interior design commission (because the customer refused to believe that a straight man
    had artistic sensibilities)?

Or pretty much any episode of Seinfeld?

No one can know that Hollywood once cast roles in which the actor shared absolutely no characteristics of the character he played, and this was perfectly acceptable.

Oh, right, the fact that Carradine wasn't even partially Chinese.

Funny, I don't remember any warnings when I watched Warrior, a much more
recent series. I *think* Andrew Koji, who played the lead, is actually

Pay no attention to Disney preferring CGI rather than casting, well,

Being attracted to a teenager who has entered puberty and is displaying secondary sex characteristics is NOT pedophilia. If anything, it's ephebophilia: a person who expresses primary sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents, generally ages 15 to 19.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephebophilia

Pedophiles are only attracted to pre-pubescent children.

And as we all know, whether he was attracted to Miri or not, he certainly wasn't *primarily* attracted to teenagers so he wouldn't even make the cut as an ephebophile.

One conversation ain't grooming, but yes, a situation in which a young
woman is seduced by a trusted adult with some authority over her over a
period of time would be grooming.

It's not paedophilia. A paedophile would reject a girl showing signs of
puberty or, in Miri's case, having largely gone through puberty.

The concept has long been moviePig-ized to describe any sexual
attraction the speaker deems to be inappropriate regardless of whether
there was an attempt to act upon it. An attraction to young but
pubescent is biology, not an adverse psychological characteristic.

I love the modern-day criticism of "racism" in anti-Japanese propaganda produced during WWII, ignoring the obvious that no only were they the
enemy, they literally were the agressors. One isn't expected to say kind
things about the enemy during war.

Jack Soo, literally Japanese, was interned during WWII, had to adopt a

Dude! That's NOT a psychological disorder! It's biology!

If we all didn't suffer from it, the species would die out.

In my opinion, the sickness isn't wanting to boink someone much younger
but wanting to date and have a long-term relationship. One would very
quickly run out of conversation with a high school girl.

Sigh. Women in the movies in the 1960s were just hotter. Star Trek had a wonderful guest cast of women with timeless hotness. My absolute
favorite was "That Which Survives", Losira, played by Lee Meriwether.

    That costume was pure eroticism

    https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/tvdatabase/images/e/e4/TOS_3x17_001.jpg

As far as I know, Michael Dorn has no actual Klingon blood, nor did Tony
Todd, who played his brother. And Leonard Nimoy had no Vulcan ancestry.

To use a more down-to-earth example, I'm not aware of a single qualified
doctor playing a doctor in any medical series ever. It never used to be
a problem. They even had a name for it: "suspension of disbelief".

I think most of the cast of the Joy Luck Club actually had Chinese
ancestry but there was at least one exception: Tamlyn Tomita, whose
heritage is Japanese. Considering that she is very outspoken about "representation", I wonder how she squared taking that job.

They show reruns of KUNG FU but they’re just absolutely covered with
    warnings.

Why? What are they warning about?

Well, all the usuals like violence and smoking, but they have all kinds of warning about improper depictions of various cultures.

    Shhh

No one can know that Hollywood once cast roles in which the actor shared absolutely no characteristics of the character he played, and this was perfectly acceptable.

Oh, that’s actually a really good point.

Pay no attention to Disney preferring CGI rather than casting, well,
    dwarves to play dwarves.

Because Peter Dinklage is either a liar or an idiot.

Like much of the third season, that script was a let down, but I don't

Of course that’s not true in either case.

Think Roddenberry was a leg man?

I think it was the 1960s when micro-mini skirts were the fashion.
