• Lebanon catches a break

From Rhino@21:1/5 to All on Thu Apr 17 13:26:40 2025
It seems that Lebanon has banned any showings of Snow White (2025) in
that country, owing to the presence of Israeli actress Gal Gadot.

Lebanese filmgoers will NOT need to look at the mess that is called Snow
White and are thus spared the horror of seeing a film that IMDB rates
    1.6 out of 10.

But but but... she's playing the villain!

I wonder how censorship works with Odelya Halevi? The actress is a
Sephardic Jew, born in Israel. Her family emigrated from Yemen. The
character she plays on Law & Order is a Lebanese ethnic born in the
    United States.

I just read that when she first came to the United States, she couldn't
speak English, but everyone in Israel learns English.

hahahahah. Plenty of folk in Israel don't even learn Hebrew (except
for the Biblical version. WHich is kind of like trying to converse
with an English speaking American but using terminology from the KJV
    of the bible)

Apparently, that doesn't preclude the film being banned. It seems that depicting any Jew at all is intolerable to the Lebanese authorities.

Do you mean Lebanese censorship? Does anyone know if Law and Order is
    even shown in Lebanon?

Did she go to school in Israel? I wonder if her parents had money and
sent her to, say, Switzerland for her education.

People educated in Canada are *supposed to* learn English and French to
at least a moderate level but here in the English part of the country, a
whole lot of people would deny any knowledge of French once they're out
of school, at least in my generation. Mind you, French immersion
schools, where the entire day is in French, has been very popular in
this country for some time. The schools I went to when I was driving
school buses were both French immersion schools, one public and one
Catholic. (Ontario taxpayers fund both public/Protestant and Catholic
schools until the end of high school.)

Maybe Halevi means to say that her English is very poor because it was a subject that didn't interest her back in her school days? A lot of my
peers had that attitude when I was in school because they felt that
they'd never use the language so it was a waste of time. (One exception
to that was my classmate "Tex" who openly lusted for Mrs. Kennedy, the
French teacher. His marks in French were abysmal but he loved to go to
French class to enjoy Mrs. Kennedy, who had a passing resemblance to
    Raquel Welch.)
