• What Did You Watch? 2025-04-20 (Sunday)

From Ubiquitous@21:1/5 to All on Mon Apr 21 04:30:41 2025
    On Easter, I watched:

    WE ARE THE 80'S

    WE ARE THE 80'S

    WE ARE THE 80'S

    THE SIMPSONS:
"The Last Man Expanding". Homer ends up as the only one in Springfield not addicted to a new miracle weight loss drug.
Wow, this wasn't nearly as funny as it should have been!

    FAMILY GUY:
"Pitch Imperfect". Peter must gain his family's respect back after he makes
a humiliating throw; Brian and Stewie become chiropractors.
I was expecting more chiropractic material and zingers. I liked the callback
    to Meg's athleticism.

    FAMILY GUY:
"Hard Times at Adam West High". Chris uses Stewie's time machine to stop himself from having an erection during a book report; Peter becomes jealous when he sits out of a lottery pool and the guys win.
I got a good laugh from the Lottery theme scratch-offs. Wouldn't Meg have eventually healed from that burn?

    KRAPOPOLIS:
"John Fate Comes a-Knockin". Everyone knows The Fates, but what about their brother, John Fate? Deliria's clairvoyant ex comes to town and gives the
    family some bad news.
I must have missed the part about him being related the Fates and was just a charlatan.

Yesterday, I got through work, but I also managed to watch a fair amount
    of stuff:

    soaps: Fri's ep's.
DOOL - Xander rants and rails against Philip after finding out about Philip's fraud. Of course, cowardly Sarah fails to fess up her role.
Gabi whines to Melinda Trask that JJ thinks that Gabi is a suspect (she
totally is!!), and hires Melinda; later Shawn and JJ threaten to arrest
Melinda when Melinda's gun shows up, but she throws Ava (who's off the
show anyway) under the bus for it. Rafe tells Sami about telling Jada
the truth about their affair; later Sami, and Vivian, leave town for international destinations.
GH - Mostly boring stuff involving Jordan and Natalia with Jenz
Sidwell; also, Jason and Sidwell throw Natalia under the bus to Maxie &
Brook Lynn, and Lucy, respectively. Joss The Spy follows the professor
dude to a lab at GH. Dumb Emma has a bad time with her community service
    at GH with children.

golf: Well, I got this one wrong! At the start of the final day at The
Heritage in Hilton Head, it did look like Justin Thomas was pretty much
out of it. But Si Woo Kim basically fell apart and dropped way down the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Thomas got his s**t together, and got back in
the lead throughout most of the day. Lurking, though, was younger guy
Andrew Novak, looking for his first PGA win - Novak birdied the final
hole to force a playoff (for the second week in a row!). But just last
last week's Master's playoff, this one also only went to one playoff
hole, with the leader, this time Justin Thomas, birding it for the win!
New family man Justin Thomas wins his first tourney in 3 years!

    Then I watched two movies:

Companion (Max) - Interesting - I thought this 2025 flick was an A24
    pic, but it isn't.
Still, this one kind of gave me some of the same vibes that A24's
"Bodies Bodies Bodies" did (though this is a somewhat more serious flick).
In this one, Sophie Thatcher (one of those actresses that has an unfortunately fixation on messing with her own face - this was filmed in
late 2023, when Thatcher had only starting f**king with her face, so
here only her lips look weird) plays a android/robot who finds out the
    hard way what she is.
Her "boyfriend" is none other than "Hughie" from "The Boys"! (Jack
Quaid). He plays a nebishy type here too.
Anyway, Thatcher's Iris is brought along by "Hughie" to be his
girlfriend on a weekend(?) visit to the upstate New York country
"estate" of a sketchy Russian dude (Rupert Friend) along with some other friends (e.g. Harvey Guillen). But things spin wildly out of control
there, and Iris ends up fighting for both her existence and her
    independence.
This was a decent thriller flick, though probably too facile in
parts. But overall I enjoyed it.

Y2K (Max) - This 2024 "horror comedy" (emphasis on the "comedy" over the "horror") flick is actually legitimately an A24 flick.
Anim would love this one, based on the casting, as both Rachel
Zegler and Alicia Silverstone are in this (as is Fred Durst, playing himself!!).
This one is about two high school nerds, and what happens to them on
New Year's Eve 1999 when the clock strikes midnight and Y2K hits.
I was surprised that one of the nerds was played by Julian Dennison
from "Deadpool 2". The other was played by Jaeden Martell, and his nerd character is in love with a popular girl (Zegler) who also,
conveniently, happens to be some kind of master coder.
Anyway, it takes too long to get there, but when midnight hits, Y2K
is unleashed, and the electronic machines come... ALIVE!
A wacky vision of the "robot apocalypse" ensues as the machines
assemble themselves together to eradicate and enslave mankind!
Can this wacky assortment of high schoolers save the world?!
I didn't like this nearly as much as "Companion". It was OK - and
Durst is somewhat amusing playing a douche-y version(?) of himself.
But this wasn't as funny as it thought it was, I think, and they
didn't balance the humorous tone with the actual apocalypse well IMO.

I don't know. You're not inspiring me to watch this.

    What did you watch?

    I watched:

Death Becomes Her (4K disc) 1992 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. The
movie stars Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as two aging frenemies who were fighting over Bruce Willis' affections, but when they discover a magic
potion that will keep then eternally alive (no matter what) wackiness
ensues. I know I saw this in the theater in 1992 when it first came
out, but I'm not sure if I ever watched it again after that. I just
recall at the time not caring for it. But I decided to give it a second chance. It was slightly better than I remembered.

Forrest Gump (4K disc) 1994 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. The
movie stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The two play star-crossed
lovers who keep running into and away from each other over the years, as
Hanks also manages to influence or participate in just about every major
event in the U.S. between the 60s and 80s. This is another movie that
I'm not sure if I've watched since the original release. In this case,
I know I liked it when it first came out, I've just had zero interest in
ever watching it again. I bought the blu-ray and it sat unopened in the
shrink wrap for years, until I upgraded to the 4K which also sat
unopened in the shrinkwrap for years, until now.

Here (Netflix) 2024 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. The movie stars
Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. They play a married couple living in a
house, but the focus of the movie isn't so much Hanks and Wright, but
the house and the general location. The movie starts with the time
period where dinosaurs walked the Earth then constantly jumps around
through time showing different period at that location and the various
families who lived there. Hanks and Wright just happen to be one of
many people who lived in that house/location. I had been looking
forward to seeing this movie since I first heard about it. It turned
out to be a major disappointment. Zemeckis took what should have been
an interesting premise and somehow made it boring. I really didn't care
about *any* of the people who lived in that house! Couldn't there have
been at least 1 interesting family? And the jumping around in time
didn't help matters, since I rarely knew what time period they were
    supposed to be in.

Flight (blu-ray) 2012 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. The movie
stars Denzel Washington as an alcoholic airline pilot who, in spite of
being drunk and high on cocaine, manages to crash land a malfunctioning airplane with only a handful of fatalities, while all the simulations
say everyone should have died. This is an excellent movie, and which
features Denzel bringing his A-game. The movie also reunites Denzel
with John Goodman, who plays Denzel's drug dealer, who knows just which combination of drugs will sober him up.

Watson - "The Man with the Alien Hand" - Team Watson try to help a man
with "alien hand syndrome: and along the way Inspector (or was it
    detective?) Lestrade is introduced.

The Last of Us - "Through the Valley" - I can't really discuss this
episode without major, and I mean *major* spoilers. But seeing as how I
was on the fence about this show, this episode would be a good jumping
off point for me to dump it for good and not look back. If you know,
    you know.

I remember having seen this is theater too. It was a little fun but
absurdly over the top. The comedy was too broad. I liked The Witches of Eastwick more, also over the top but an effort at a plot. I never read
    that John Updike novel.

I've never been motivated to rewatch either.

Saw this in theater too. It made enough of an impression I've never

This is one of my favorite Denzel Washington performances. The script
    had some problems.

I watched the pilot of fringe because a friend of mine did those fancy

Death Becomes Her (4K disc) 1992 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. The movie stars Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as two aging frenemies who were fighting over Bruce Willis' affections, but when they discover a magic
potion that will keep then eternally alive (no matter what) wackiness
ensues. I know I saw this in the theater in 1992 when it first came
out, but I'm not sure if I ever watched it again after that. I just
recall at the time not caring for it. But I decided to give it a second chance. It was slightly better than I remembered.

And some double whammy classic stunt butt

Forrest Gump (4K disc) 1994 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. The
movie stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The two play star-crossed
lovers who keep running into and away from each other over the years, as Hanks also manages to influence or participate in just about every major event in the U.S. between the 60s and 80s. This is another movie that
I'm not sure if I've watched since the original release. In this case,
I know I liked it when it first came out, I've just had zero interest in
ever watching it again. I bought the blu-ray and it sat unopened in the shrink wrap for years, until I upgraded to the 4K which also sat
unopened in the shrinkwrap for years, until now.

Here (Netflix) 2024 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. The movie stars
Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. They play a married couple living in a
house, but the focus of the movie isn't so much Hanks and Wright, but
the house and the general location. The movie starts with the time
period where dinosaurs walked the Earth then constantly jumps around
through time showing different period at that location and the various families who lived there. Hanks and Wright just happen to be one of
many people who lived in that house/location. I had been looking
forward to seeing this movie since I first heard about it. It turned
out to be a major disappointment. Zemeckis took what should have been
an interesting premise and somehow made it boring. I really didn't care about *any* of the people who lived in that house!

This is an excellent movie, and which features Denzel bringing his A-game.

I’ve given up. No matter what I do, Watson won’t record. :-(

The Last of Us - "Through the Valley" - I can't really discuss this
episode without major, and I mean *major* spoilers. But seeing as how I
was on the fence about this show, this episode would be a good jumping
off point for me to dump it for good and not look back. If you know,
    you know.

You've got a DVR that is protecting you. I only watched the first
episode but felt no need to watch more.

I watched the pilot of 'Fringe'. Where we got to see Anna Torv in her
undies and literally see thru her character's boyfriend.

I watched the pilot of fringe because a friend of mine did those fancy credits. But the fancy credits were about all I liked.

"How long has he been dead?"
    "Five hours."
    "Interrogate him."

Fringe was a great show. As I recall, it started to fall apart in the
final season, but up until then it was a great ride. And they even made reference to it being set in the X-Files universe, which was a nice
little nod given the similarities between the two shows.

It got better. "Fringe" is one of those shows whose first season wasn't
very good, but afterwards it morphed into a much better show.

And it has John Noble chewing scenery. :) It was another J.J.Abrams production so it had for wait for J.J.'s attention deficit disorder to
bounce him off to somewhere else and let the real producers work on it.

This stank. Watson is a geneticist, not a lawyer. At some point, he
breached his duty of confidentiality to his patient. Yes, he was
expected to discuss the alien hand syndrome with the police, but not the
rest of the diagnosis. Narcisitic personality has a genetic marker?

It taunts me, I record the show before it so I get the first couple minutes every week, but I never get Watson itself.
