Fringe S4E02 'One Night in October'

IMDb sez: The "Over Here" team helps the "Over There" team look into a
string of murders in which the victims are frozen from the inside out.

Contains a parody of the Maxell "Blown Away Guy" ad - we see Walter
Bishop 'relaxing' in front of a huge bank of speakers, sitting deep in
an armchair, while playing classical music at high volumes.

At the gas station, when Noreen Miller is filling up, the emblem on the
front of her Dodge mini van is obscured with silver tape. There is also
a Ford Explorer, which leaves the station as the scene opens, which also
has its grill emblem covered with silver tape.
(This was because Ford stopped paying for product placements. Nissan
    took their place.)

Olivia Dunham: You know what? He's not even my type.
Astrid Farnsworth: Do you ever think that maybe your type just doesn't
    exist?
    (Literally true!)

Fringe S4E03 'Alone in the World'

IMDb sez: "Two bullying boys die and exhibit an alarming state of rapid
decay. Their would-be victim, an extremely lonely boy, has a remarkably
unusual connection to the killer. Meanwhile, Walter fears for his sanity."

The glyphs for this episode spell out: REBORN

Walter explains to Olivia the spores on the bodies are cordyceps fungi. Cordyceps fungi are what cause people to mutate in the Playstation game
The Last of Us. This episode premiered 2 years before the game was

    What Did You Watch?

I'm still going through my DVR looking for the oldest movies still on
    there, so I watched:

Round and Round (Hallmark) 2023 (recorded in 2023) Hanukkah movie about
a woman (Vic Michaelis) who gets caught in a time loop, waking up every morning, the day of her parent's Hanukkah party where she will be dumped
by her boyfriend and conveniently meet a new guy (Byran Greenberg) that
same day. Is it fate? How many times will she have to go through the
loop before she falls in love? It held my interest well enough. I
liked that she quickly figured out she was in a time loop and decided to actively learn about time loops. I was a little annoyed that certain
events that kept happening and she seemed to make minimal effort to
change them. On the other hand, there was a fire that kept happening no
matter what she did, at one point the fire extinguisher itself
spontaneously combusted, so it's possible those other things were just
going to happen no matter what and they didn't bother to show her making
much of an effort to stop it from happening. Nevertheless, her
insisting on doing pretty much the same routine every loop, did seem a
    little weird.

Batman (blu-ray) 1966 movie based on the TV series starring Adam West as
a man dressed as a bat, who just can't get rid of a bomb. This was
mostly background noise with the writer's commentary. He had a lot of
good stories about the making of the movie and the TV series (he was
also a writer for the weekly series).

    Biweekly, and sometimes triweekly!

(And yes, I looked it up. Bizarrely, biweekly can mean both twice a week or every two weeks).

    Lorenzo Semple Jr.
He pretty much created the whole thing and wrote the movie and pilot and
worked on the series I believe it’s whole run from another country.

Of possible interest: the movie takes place before the series and was originally intended to be made first. Note that they’ve never seen the Catwoman unmasked before.

I love this movie. I remember seeing it with a bunch of other kids in a
    station wagon at the drive-in.

Anytime I watch it, I see all these things I wish they could’ve fixed like obvious stunt doubles and back projection and then I wonder: if they made
it better, would it actually be worse?

Van Johnson a.k.a. The Green Hornet plays Lyndon Baines Johnson. Notice him trying to take credit for the Cape Crusaders wins. Conditioner Gordon keeps telling LBJ “they did it“ and LBJ keeps changing it to “we did it”

The movie is full of sly little stuff like that.

Adam West plays much of the movie as Bruce Wayne and he’s a darker
character than the one in the series, telling the four super villains that
if they’ve hurt Miss Kitka he’s going to kill them all!

    Great soundtrack as well

The U.N.C.L.E. Movies get a bad rap that’s not quite that deserved. While

    What Did You Watch?

I watched HUNTER KILLER. A movie based around a Russian General who
kidnapped the Russian President and is attempting to start a war with
the USA. It starts out with a US sub following a Russian sub under the
ice cap when a blowout occurs on the Russian sub. Then a hidden
Russian sub takes out the US sub. (All part of a setup to make it look
like the USA started the conflict.)

The Russian General has all communications cut off so the Russian
President can't contact anyone so as far as anyone is concerned the
Russian General is in charge. All because he doesn't believe the
President was tough enough. Though I'm not sure where he thought any
sort of war with the USA was going to go. Since he didn't seem to want
a full on war, but somehow thinks that getting a minor conflict (can
taking out a US submarine be considered minor?) going will cement him
    in charge.

The USA doesn't know this is going on so they need to send a sub out
to find out what happened as they know from telemetry and sonar that
two subs went down. They don't have any close enough other than a sub
in port due to a lack of a commanding officer. So they promote Gerard
Butler's character to Commander and send him out to figure out what is
going on. (It's his turn to save the world again but with backup.)

The USA sends in a 4 man team to figure out what is going on with the
Russian President and find out about the Russian General when they see
his men executing the Russian President's security team. So that's
when the USA decides to rescue the Russian President and orders
Butler's sub in to the Russian base to get the US soldiers and Russian President out.

They do so with help from the Russian sub commander from the sub that
was sunk at the beginning of the movie who they were able to rescue.
He provides the knowledge need to get through the minefield in the
narrow passage into the base so they can pick the remaining member of
the 4 man team and the President. Though it's not an easy task as the
4 man team is discovered (hence the drop to a 1 man team) and the
General order his people to find the sub that he knows must be there
and sink it.) Oddly enough he must only have loyal people as his
soldier are not only willing to kill the American soldiers but also
    the Russian President.

Of course multiple times they make out like submarines are made of
paper even at depths that shouldn't be a problem for them. That allows
them to have the dramatic leaks that must be fixed before they drown
and fires that keep ocurring. Luckily it all works out in the end.

I guess this is the last movie for Michael Nyqvist (Viggo in JOHN
    WICK).

    . . .

I guess this is the last movie for Michael Nyqvist (Viggo in JOHN
    WICK).

Looks like it was this movie.

    What Did You Watch?

    Hey, thanks for asking!

Much like Arthur I am rooting around removing old stuff from the DVR much
of which includes movies from TCM recorded in the middle of the night.

I just watched one of my favorite Bogart movies and definitely my favorite Bacall movie, TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT.

How have I never noticed that much of this 1944 classic was recycled into 1959’s RIO BRAVO?

The foreplay between Bogart and Bacall (which culminates in the famous “you know how to whistle” line) is repeated almost exactly between John Wayne
and Angie Dickinson in the latter film, as is their whole relationship.
Walter Brennan‘s character is split between his character in the second
film and the Dean Martin character.

Of course Rio Bravo itself was remade into El Dorado, where James Caan gets
all of Angie Dickinson’s lines. “I always make you mad, don’t I?“

I guess I have the makings of a triple feature here.
