After every range day, my shoulder was always black-and-blue with bruises from firing the 12-gauge shotgun with rifled slug instead of buckshot. Shoot that ten times in a row and you'll be aching for a week. Nothing I'd rather have in a firefight but I could do without shooting it at targets.

Why is a shotgun your first choice in a firefight? Clueless civilian
that I am, I would have thought that something with great accuracy,
fast/easy reloading with mags, and minimal recoil would be more
desireable, something like an AR-15 maybe. (I'm just guessing that an
AR-15 has minimal recoil since I've never heard of users complaining
about recoil.) Or is it more a psychological thing with the sound of a
shotgun racking being more intimidating to the people you are engaging
    with?

I would imagine it's the takedown capability. Never fired a slug but
it's used for hunting deer so you can imagine the accuracy with a 12
gauge using slugs isn't that bad, but the takedown capability is
great. Even a 12 gauge using bird shot leaves an impact on your
shoulder (or at least it did when I was a kid.)

that I am, I would have thought that something with great accuracy,

A shotgun firing a slug (not buckshot) is as accurate as any rifle and can reach out and touch you with precision from a lot farther away than a pistol. And it has the power to send that slug through the engine block of a car so there's not a lot of things the bad guy can hide behind that will protect him from you.

Because ballistic gel is intended to simulate flesh. Adding in cherry
would give a bright red color but wouldn't simulate hitting an actual
    t-rex.

    horror, the horror...."

Not sure why they didn't fill it with cherry...

Because ballistic gel is intended to simulate flesh. Adding in cherry
would give a bright red color but wouldn't simulate hitting an actual
    t-rex.

Well, that's interesting (...though I was being snarky). But where
structural realism is intended, I'd expect some sort of skull layer.

Why is a shotgun your first choice in a firefight? Clueless civilian
that I am, I would have thought that something with great accuracy,

A shotgun firing a slug (not buckshot) is as accurate as any rifle and can reach out and touch you with precision from a lot farther away than a pistol. And it has the power to send that slug through the engine block of a car so there's not a lot of things the bad guy can hide behind that will protect him from you.

I didn't realize shotguns were particularly accurate, let alone that a
slug could go through an engine block. Now I see the appeal!

fast/easy reloading with mags, and minimal recoil would be more
desireable, something like an AR-15 maybe. (I'm just guessing that an
AR-15 has minimal recoil since I've never heard of users complaining
about recoil.) Or is it more a psychological thing with the sound of a
shotgun racking being more intimidating to the people you are engaging
    with?

Consider that they use shotguns loaded with bird shot to take down
birds that are off in the distance while the shot is spreading. Where
shotguns are particularly inaccurate is with the sawed off shotgun
with the short barrel. That is weapon that's useful in a home/building
with lots of rooms, but not so much if you are outside.
