Something is overheating and the tv shuts itself off and turns back on
every 20 minutes or so. This can't be good.

Anyone want to make a recommendation? I'd like something with buttons I
can push when the remote fails. And I don't want a tv that spies on me,
    a la Max Headroom.

Have you completely ruled out the possibility of a repair shop fixing
your TV? Or, less likely, asking a friend who is an electronics hobbyist
to fix it for you or at least diagnose the problem?

And I'd like there to be more to watch that's less crappy.

Is it possible just to get an oversized computer monitor these days?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there are. Of course it depends what you mean by "oversized"....

As fate would have it, I saw a headline a couple of hours ago about a
guy who'd been using a two-monitor setup to write code but who had
recently transitioned to a single LARGE computer monitor. Here's a link
    to the article:

    https://www.techradar.com/computing/innocn-40c1u-ultrawide-5k-monitor-review

I don't know if that's going to be big enough for you but the article
might help you figure out what feature set to look for.

I also did a very quick search for "large computer monitors 2025" and
this was the first article it found:

    https://whatintech.com/largest-computer-monitor/

I am NOT endorsing this website - I've never heard of them before - so
do your due diligence i.e. take anything they say with a big grain of
salt. The article *should* serve to give you a rough idea of what is
available in large monitors if nothing else.

I've got a 34inch monitor and if I had it to do over again I would
have gone for two 27inch monitors. The 34inch (ultra wide) is great
when watching movies. As the movie can completely fill up the screen.

The biggest issue I have with the large monitor is when dealing with
multiple windows that I need to keep opening because when a new window
pops up it may be to one side or the other. So it takes me a moment to
find the new window. Yes, I know it's not a big deal but it is
annoying. Something that would not be an issue with a 27 inch monitor
because that would just cover your view port while the 34 inch monitor
expands way beyond what I can see easily.

Of course you CAN have twin monitors - I've got twin 27" monitors and
am listening to a Youtube on monitor 2 while typing this on #1 - I'm
using 16 point type while typing this which is obviously rendered into
10, 12 or whatever you have set on your end.
