• [OT] "Pretendians" launch lawsuit

A woman and her three daughters, all of whom claim to be indigenous, are
suing an indigenous woman who says they are actually Ukrainian for
$500,000. The defendant describes herself as someone who researches
people who claim to be indigenous on request and says the plaintiffs
    aren't really indigenous.

It's not really surprising that this happened. In fact, it was almost inevitable given some of the high-profile "outings" of other
"pretendians" like Buffy Ste-Marie (and the likes of Senator Elizabeth
    Warren in the US)!

Clearly, institutions need to get serious about defining what it means
to be indigenous and agreeing on what documentation supports claims to
be indigenous. (It's probably too much to hope for that we get rid of
special statuses for Indians, Innuit, and Metis altogether and just
treat them as fellow Canadians. FYI: Metis are a group of people that
resulted from intermarriage of Europeans, mostly French fur traders,
with Indians, mostly in the years before Canada became a country.)
