  • [OT] Germany backing away from recognition of Palestinian state but Can

    It seems sanity is starting to re-assert itself in the German
    government: they've decided NOT to recognize a Palestinian state next
    month after all. Canada, on the other hand, has confirmed that it WILL recognize a Palestinian state, although nothing has been said about what borders that state will have. In other words, is it recognizing a
    Palestinian state in the West Bank alone, Gaza alone, both Gaza and the
    West Bank or even a Palestine that runs from the (Jordan) river to the (Mediterranean) sea?

    Carney is clearly counting votes and seeing that he has around 2 million
    Muslim voters but only about 350,000 Jews, has decided that it makes
    electoral sense to support Palestine rather than Israel. Cabinet
    ministers like Melanie Joly and Anita Anand clearly support him in this.

    Although Carney has placed conditions on his recognition of Palestinian statehood, the conditions are non-sensical. For instance, he's insisting
    that the Palestinians agree to elections NEXT YEAR but is granting
    recognition next month: talk about putting the cart in front of the
    horse! They can promise anything they like now and then renege next
    year, claiming that conditions changed unexpectedly. After all, Mahmoud
    Abbas, the current leader of the Palestinian Authority was elected to a
    4 year term TWENTY YEARS AGO and has refused to hold another election
    ever since.

    Carney is also insisting that Hamas not take part in the election even
    though intel on the ground says Hamas is the most popular force among Palestinians BY FAR. Obviously, there is nothing stopping Hamas from
    just rebranding itself so it isn't called Hamas and then participating
    in the election.

    Though "rebranding" is unlikely to change principals' ethics, it may
    facilitate a shift in policy. These are politicians, after all.
