"The Future.": a poem for Louise Gluck
an interpretation of: "I came not to bring Peace, but the Sword."
--Jesus of Nazareth
A sidelong glance: Is this the lesson?
Fall and be forgotten.
Clearly not.
Petals fall from billions of flowers
And curl back to earth.
Tree-leaves fall and settle on our planet,
Fostering a future: sweet mulch.
Not like an Angel who falls, a direct handiwork,
Filled with the breath of God.
There is no going back to earth, there is no potential.
Or is there?
With murderous intent,
A great Angel falls and his many damned Slaves.
He is the first to die-- At Jesus's hand,
For the Angel this is called Spiritual Death.
For the rest this is called liberation.
This death is recorded.
The lesser Angels, those incidentally damned, now have choices.
To replace the great one and possess his slaves--
Is to face a death like his within an instant.
The mercey is to the rest of the Slaves
And to all other Children of God;
There is no mercy for the executed.
Their deaths are recorded.
The other choices are what God prays for--
nevertheless, the thought often is:
God prays! so what! I'll win; I'll try to kill Him.
The other choices are life.
Does it take an Angel to see that?
Become Adam's seed, or return to your office-- you have it in you.
Become a strong warrior.
There are many wars to fight that do not involve killing.
Your wisdoms are needed.
You can be substituted for, though never replaced.
Knowledge must be disputed, travail is here;
The Great God is Rising;
The Others, how They watch and how listen.
They are helpless to hide; now They rise after.
