Always look at the middle-level (5/10) reviews for actual insight. Cameron sounds oddly like a would-be Ron Howard incapable of delivering the excitement goods any more but great at the technical stuff.

Is the story any less stupiod than the first one?

I never saw the first one. By that time, Cameron had gone over to the darkside, aka, rabid environmentalism.
After reading reviews of evil cliche heaped on cliche, I sized it up as a kind of alien "V for Vendetta" and avoided it.

Arguably it was more of a ripoff of Alan Dean Foster's _Midworld_ with
"Dancing With Wolves" laid on top of it.

I'm unclear on which Ron Howard films we're supposed to look at as some
    kind of milestones.
