I think Eckhart's character figured it out as soon as he saw the fire & tag #, but just like when he talked the indian into thinking he killed the little girl, he did not CARE if it was true or not. HE just wanted to "solve the case" FAST, right orwrong suspect.

He wreck Jerry's life TOO before admitting ANOTHER ERROR on HIS part.... They just didn't do a good job in bringing the storyline ending to the audience.
And what a shame being they had so MANY SUPERSTARS appearing in it. Bad job on Penn's part.
