It took me twenty five years after reading this to finally dine
    on rijstaffel.

Now a brief search turns up web pages like "Top Ten Rijstaffel's
    in Toronto".
Truly, we were in the dark ages.

Really? I don't think there are that many in the entire US,

I'd love to be proven wrong.

Many if not most Indonesian restaurants feature the dish.

That's just it. With a name like "rijsttafel", before the age of
the World Wide Web, where one can just look stuff up so
    easily...

Dunno. Nobody who'd ever read any of the Nicholas van Rijn stories
    would do that.

one would search in vain in *Dutch* restaurants for the dish
    instead.

Of course, before the WWW, I'm not sure how one
would look up Dutch restaurants, either.

Has it been that long? Libraries did, in that era, have
travel guides for most of the non-communist globe.

I think I had a choice of two in San Francisco a generation ago. The one = >I chose=20

I'm looking, but I still don't see what I think of as a 'rijstaffel'. The W= >ikipedia definition,
which matches my memory of what I have had in Amsterdam, is:

Sounds a lot like Dim Sum.

This is because here in the US, we still ARE in the dark ages. And
Sanur Restaurant in NYC is closed down too.
