    Thunderbird is not the best newsreader out there. It is, however, one of the cheapest, as it costs zero point zero, except in annoyances. I use Hogwasher. The Hog is not free. The Hog is also not free of annoyances, including some which have been around since version 1. (It crashes. It eats RAM. These two facts are related.)

    There aren’t as many newsreaders. Forte Agent, possibly the best Windows newsreader, hasn’t been updated since 2014. It’s still supported, but who knows how long that will be true. And it’s not free.

    This is my first post under the new combo, and -- assuming it works --
    now I get to go fine-tune some account settings.[2]

    [1] I handed in the official grades around 5pm. Woohoo!!
    [2] "Courier" is the default font? Here's hoping I can change it.

    I used to use Unison but it quit working. Tried Hogwasher and didn't like it. It also leaves lots of folders all around your HD. I ended up with Usenapp which also has some issues (mostly locking up and crashing). Not free either. But it's interface is a lot like Unison (for the Mac).

    Its interface is also like Agent (for Windows) a little, because I put
    in some feature requests during the beta phase :)

    Crashing is odd, mine's almost infinitely stable. The dev has a bug report/discussion forum, you should hit that up.

    I suspect I'm going to follow in your footsteps soon.

    Thunderbird's settings <poke poke> are not always intuitive, but they
    seem to cover the basics.

    Google Groups' Usenet interface was a decent option if you had to swap computers frequently or had to deal with firewall issues, but it had a
    number of limitations.

    Granted, GG has its uses outside of Usenet, e.g. https://groups.google.com/g/fanfic-downloader is the main support forum
    for FFF, but it's a pretty small segment of the internet.

    slrn? <https://slrn.org>

    it is packaged for _all_ standard linux distros, BSDs and even windows.

    i'm afraid i don't know which linux you're using, but installing it
    should be as simple as a `sudo apt install slrn` or equivalent.

    i'm also aware that it doesn't have xrn's buttons, but an AIX hand
    should get the hang of it pretty easily.

    $ ./configure CC=cc CFLAGS="-DHAVE_UNISTD_H -DSTDC_HEADERS -DSOLARIS"
    $ vi config.h # set some things
    $ make

    And it worked.

    Frankly astonishing that in this day and age, when "portable" usually
    means, "It builds on Fedora Core *and* UBuntu". I was quite pleased.

    But I'll keep using BetterBird. ;-)

    The captchas did no such thing.

    Avoiding them altogether would also have been a solution. For them,
    not for you, of course.

    At least one Manufacturer's Website (hardware) would accept a model or
    serial number with a wrong character -- and then show it unambiguously
    with the correct one.

    Perhaps the labels on the box/equipment are required to be printed in
    an ambiguous font, if not by law then by Standard. Note that either
    involves the participation of brain-dead persons. But that such people
    are involved in writing laws or standards surely comes as no surprise.

    Thunderbird is not the best newsreader out there. It is, however, one of the >cheapest, as it costs zero point zero, except in annoyances. I use Hogwasher. >The Hog is not free. The Hog is also not free of annoyances, including some >which have been around since version 1. (It crashes. It eats RAM. These two >facts are related.)

    There aren’t as many newsreaders. Forte Agent, possibly the best Windows >newsreader, hasn’t been updated since 2014. It’s still supported, but who >knows how long that will be true. And it’s not free.

    I use Thunderbird for my e-mail and Agent for my newsgroups - and have
    done for 10+ years (and as one serving on 4 non-profit boards, one
    national, one provincial and two local I have some BIG e-mail archives
    - I do not know whether Thunderbird has a maximum size but I've seen
    no sign of it...)

    I'm not a big fan of 'this is the perfect tool for ALL applications"
    though I could be convinced app A for job 1 and app B for job 2 may be
    the best reasonable choice.
