Since I officially finished my semester yesterday[1], I decided to spend
a little bit of time today moving my usenet presence to the combo of
Eternal September and Thunderbird.
This is my first post under the new combo, and -- assuming it works --
now I get to go fine-tune some account settings.[2]

[1] I handed in the official grades around 5pm. Woohoo!!
[2] "Courier" is the default font? Here's hoping I can change it.

There aren’t as many newsreaders. Forte Agent, possibly the best Windows newsreader, hasn’t been updated since 2014. It’s still supported, but who knows how long that will be true. And it’s not free.

I used to use Unison but it quit working. Tried Hogwasher and didn't like it. It also leaves lots of folders all around your HD. I ended up with Usenapp which also has some issues (mostly locking up and crashing). Not free either. But it's interface is a lot like Unison (for the Mac).

I suspect I'm going to follow in your footsteps soon.

There's going to be a certain amount of stuff that displays best in
a mono-spaced font. I use lucidatypewriter myself.

I use XanaNews, an open-source newsreader. It used to be the personal
project of a guy, but at some point it was added to gighub. It does not
seem to be in active development. I have not been motivated to update
my installation in quite some time.
The whole time I was both employed and aware of Usenet, I was using xrn on >AIX. Since retirement, I've been using t-bird on Linux. After a year or
two of that, I found an xrn that was supposed to be usable on linux.
Unfortunately, it wasn't a binary in a repository. It was source code
that needed to be built. (Yeah, I know, that's how all software used to
be distributed.) I spent a week or so, off and on, trying to build it
with no luck. Too many configuration options; I think that the creator
of that bundle was assuming that I'd be running a local Usenet server.
Is anybody out there using something similar to xrn? If so, I'd appreciate
an email, as this is really getting pretty far off-topic.

I use Lucida Console, which is probably pretty similar.

I use xrn, and have been since 1989.
I regularly build it on redhat linux with no difficulties.
It is set up to use imake.
$ cd /work/ws/xrn-10.0
$ imake
$ make
No special configuration required[*]. After building, you can specify
the NNTP server with the NNTPSERVER environment variable or from
the command line:
$ echo $NNTPSERVER
news.usenetserver.com
$ functions xrn
function xrn
{
/usr/bin/xrn -authenticator 'user/pass mstemper/nntpserverpassword'
}

I believe that Lucida Console has the zero slashed which is very useful.
