  • OT: Japanese cyberpunk anime/movies?

    Hello guys,

    This is OT so I apologize. Does anyone here know of any good japanese
    cyberpunk anime? Ghost in the shell is legendary, and recently I've
    started to watch Ergo Proxy which seems to be pretty ok, but do you know anything similar to ghost in the shell?

    It seems like cyberpunk is a vanishing genre, and I haven't read anything
    good since Gibson/Stephenson, and for bothm it was many years since.

    "Good" is difficult to determine for cyberpunk because people are
    looking for very different things in it. Cyberpunk certainly hasn't disappeared in anime.

    Recent:
    _Cyberpunk:Edgerunners_ is good and very recent. heavy on the "punk". _Psycho-Pass_ Perhaps matches GITS the most in tone, but without the physical
    emphasis. Season 1 very good, S2 not, S3 in between. _Vivy:Fluorite Eye's Song_ is very good but light on the punk

    Old:
    _Serial Experiments Lain_ is the classic pioneer. Perhaps not punk
    _Texhnolyze_ is highly stylish but light on the cyber.
    _Dennou Coil_ is very good. Heavy on the cyber but far away from punk.
    _Macro Plus_ is short and very good but lighter on punk.
    _Cowboy Bebop_ is very good, perhaps punkish and outerspace SF but
    not highly cyber

    Great! Thank you very much Chris, that should keep me occupied for a
    while. Texhnolyze is on the list, didn't like Bebop that much, psycho-pass
    was ok but not the same level of ghost in the shell, but definitely
    worthwhile. =)
