Hm...aside from your mention of Cordelia and Aral Vorkosigan, the only
others that come quickly to mind are the Weasleys from the Harry Potter >series, and the Carpenters from the Harry Dresden series.

    Tony

I would add _Have Spacesuit, Will Travel_ (for some value of "supportive")
    & _The Rolling Stones_.

Yeah, I'm not steering more readers towards JKR.

The dad from TRS should be a list of parents who understand that at
some point their boys will be serving long prison sentences... unless
    they get killed first.

That said, he treats Meade poorly and the rest of the family isn't much
    better.

I missed all Heinleins while I was a child/teen, and once I circled back
in my 20s-30s, I learned that I'm pretty much Heinlein-blind. These two
are not amongst the few I have read.

    Interesting difference of opinion.

My recollection is that Stone continues a job he hates to support his family, and creates a family enterprise they can all work together. I recall mom
as supportive, but setting definite limits. The twins can sell racy
calendars, Good Hustle! But not *too* racy. You're 13!

In HSWT the dad is Socratically supportive:
"Dad, I want to go to the moon."
    "You have my permission"
    "But how?"
"Well now, that sounds like your problem..."

My father gave me _Have Spacesuit, Will Travel_ when I was 11; it was
a suggestion from one of his co-workers. Served as an excellent
(and lifetime) introduction to science fiction and reading in
general (although I had been a Tom Swift Jr. fan at that point).

I think it helps a lot to encounter Heinlein young and to have done so
40 or 50 years ago. And pretty he appeals to boys more than girls.

Funny thing is I discovered Asimov's chemistry series and physics
series before I discovered his SF but had already read most of
Heinlein's "The Past Through Tomorrow" series before I discovered that
Asimov also wrote SF (!) I then fell in love with the Foundation
series notably the first section of Foundation and the Arkady Darrell
section of Second Foundation - and even at 14 knew there was something
very "off" about the relationship between her (which I don't think was voluntary on her part) and Stettin who I thought was one of Asimov's
great villains. I had not at that point discovered Edward Gibbon so in
my naivety though Asimov had come up with Bel Riose and the other late
Empire characters on his own. Silly me.
