• For Binky ... Bible Studies

From Daniel70@21:1/5 to All on Sat Mar 1 23:23:05 2025
I thought I was the restored Reader for Mass tonight (WRONG ... Next Saturday!!) but, Binky, it must have been "Devine Intervention" that I
was there, tonight, listening to the Readings (rather than actually
reading the Readings) and part of tonight Gospel struck a cord with me.

    Luke 6, 39 - 45 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%206&version=NIV

    which includes verses 41 & 42

    Quote
41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and
pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to
your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first
take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove
the speck from your brother’s eye.
    End Quote.

... and I thought of YOU, Binky, always telling everyone that their
Beliefs about "Doctor Who" are *WRONG* because they disagree with YOURs,
    Binky.

Maybe YOU, Binky, need to remove the 'plank' from YOUR eye, Binky, so
YOU, Binky, can more clearly see what is going on around YOU, Binky!!

[Yet more religious mumbo jumbo snipped]

The NIV is a Satanic Anti-Christian humanist verion of the
Holy Word, i.e.e The NIV is an imposter.

Egads! A Christian who is prejudiced against a version of the
Holy Bible because it's different to his own one! Why can't ye
all just get along? After all, you supposedly worship the same
    god.

Oh, and why didn't you just say the NIV was "Bogus!"? That's
usually your word of the week for anything you deem to be false.

Of course, most sensible people think that they're all "Bogus"
but I won't de-rail this happy religious thread with common
sense and logic... a lot of people who believe in that alien
from outer space - that supposedly created this world - seem to
have trouble with that sort of thing.

Well, don't forget that this falls in line with Dave's anti-Catholic

Church started by St. Peter himself, somehow isn't "true" Christianity.

Depending on how you structure them, there are at least three, six, 10,
or 12 main types of "Christianity". Sub-divide them further and you get
more than 200 Christian denominations in the USA alone, and around
45,000 around the world - all with their own slightly different
beliefs, and interpretations and versions of the Bible.

And that's without including Judaism, which is based on the same

Yes, you are correct. The point I was trying to make was that St. Peter
was charged by Jesus to start what was the original Christian Church
(the term Catholic meaning "universal"). I'm also aware that in the
early stages of this set-up, there were people who wanted to carry on
the tenets and beliefs of Judaism...and just add the acknowledgement
that Jesus Christ is the messiah they had been waiting for.

Dave, or anyone else for that matter, making comments regarding the
Catholic Church that go beyond disagreements on interpretation or
beliefs is being prejudicial; how can the first Christian Church not be
a "true" Christian Church? Because the Catholic Church doesn't use the
KJV Bible? That line of thinking is crazy talk. Calling the NIV Bible,
as Dave called it, "Satanic, Anti-Christian, Humanist" is just as bad.
That kind of logic is mind blowing.

It's like in my line of work...high school band director. In my state,
there are two popular schools of thought regarding ensemble tuning and
balance of characteristic sounds. They are both equally valid
approaches to getting a band to play with good sounds. However, when
you apply for a job, many schools will ask which approach you prefer to
teach. If you respond with the "wrong" method, you don't get the job.

*ALL* religions are "crazy talk". They're all just a load of complete
bovine excrement that should be well past their use-by-date in a
supposed intelligent modern society. The fact that any of them still
exist is beyond any sensible comprehension.

But if fools want to believe such nonsense preached at them by greedy
con-men in the 'church', then that's up to them, as long as they do not
go around trying to "convert" nor causing problems for any other
people. The fact that so many wars and deaths have been caused by these supposed "good" people fighting about whose mythical superbeing is
better than someone else's mythical superbeing, simply proves that the
human race has still not reached the heights of real intelligence yet. Especially when you consider most silly religions have a specific rule
    about not harming others!!

Well, don't forget that this falls in line with Dave's
anti-Catholic rhetoric. Funny how he thinks that the Catholic
Church, the Christian Church started by St. Peter himself,
    somehow isn't "true" Christianity.

It's not just him, on this island we have people very similar up
north... there is a right Bible (Usually the KJV) and a wrong
bible (Anything Catholics use). That's why I laugh at that sort
of thing. Some people are such pure Christians they deem other
Christians to be less pure... and those are the ones that
typically do and say the most un-Christian things. Which only

There's no evidence in the Bible that Jesus was a descendant of King David.

Yes, there are two (conflicting and contradictory) lines of descent in the
Gospels from King David down to Joseph Carpenter.

But according to Christian doctrine, Jesus was conceived by Mary through
divine intervention. Joseph was not a blood relative.

Therefore, without a documented line of descent from King David to Mary (NOT
Joseph), no matter how apocryphal or inaccurate, there is no evidence that
Jesus was a descendant of King David.

That said, almost all Jews probably were. There's nothing special about
being descended from a ruler of the same people a thousand years earlier.

(There's a famous piece of genealogical research that claims that it's
almost impossible for any Briton with 4 British or Irish grandparents to
NOT be a descendant of Edward III ...)

Oh!! No!! Binky, which bit of The Bible do we believe??

    How about, none of it?

Life is so much easier that way.

One part lists 38 Generation from Abraham to Christ but, then,
Verse 17 states there were only 28 Generations!!

Do I believe the list of 38 Generations or the statement of
    (14 + 14) 28 Generations??

The BRV says 69 generations. So take your pick.

    It's all made up anyway...

    <face palm> Somebody clearly wasn't paying attention!

No wonder you can sit through an Agatha Christie play and not
know who did it at the end!

    Yes, the BRV...!!!

You could re-read this thread again, properly... or try and work
it out using your little grey cells.

[Clue] It's on topic for this thread and if you think about it
it's a lot easier to work out than who killed the people in "And
    Then There Were None".

So is 'BRV' a reference to 'Binky Regal Version'??

    Not quite.

    Or, maybe, 'Blueshirt Revised Version'??

    Bingo!

    Well done. <claps>

See, you can do it if you try... :-)

I tried back-reading about ten levels .... but got no reference to 'BRV'.

However, one could wonder why SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T BELIEVE in The Bible's

(.... but still can't work out who did all the killing!! Even after discussion with one of the sisters who was there with me!!)

Doh! Well obviously my [imaginary] version is revised enough to
contain something that I can believe in! A book is only a
collection of written words after all, and the bible is only
considered "holy" because religious people tell us that it is.
How many people would have read the bible if it wasn't part of
our upbringing and education system? Is it a book we'd have all
chosen to take off the shelf in a library and read?

If a man on the street told us those same [highly unbelievable]
stories trying to pass them off as factual we'd laugh at him and
move on... but when somebody in a pulpit tells us those stories
we lap them up and think we've been let in to some sort of
    secret enlightenment.

The BRV - if published - would be aimed at the less simple
    minded among us.
