Yes. He was famous for the Navy Lark, a much beloved sitcom on radio, and was

It's common for TV shows with reboots and revivals to be referred to by the
starting year of each era. Hence Battlestar Galactica (1978) and Battlestar
Galactica (2004), and the BBC breaks its Doctor Who iPlayer offerings into
Doctor Who (1963), Doctor Who (2005) and Doctor Who (undated, as it's the
current iteration of the show, but will soon be known as 2023 I'm sure).

IMDB, like Wikipedia, is full of nonsense thanks to the silliness of
allowing the "information" there to be posted and edited by the users

Yes. He was famous for the Navy Lark, a much beloved sitcom on radio, and

"Worzel Gummidge", a very comedic role.

And in A Funny Think Happened on the Way to the Forum.

His comic talents can even be seen in Who from time to time, starting with >> Spearhead From Space, which saw him careering down a hospital driveway in a >> wheelchair comedy chase scene and gurning in a ridiculous manner while
being "strangled" by the Nestene consciousness.

I may have mentioned before that I do a bit of Volunteering at the local Salvation Army thrift Shop .... to which someone donated 59 of the 68

(Bugger!! I original spelt that 'Midsommer' but the went to IMDB and

I might have brought them ..... cept I've seen them over and over and ...

And those are just off the top of my head. There are plenty more, even
    not counting non-UK ones.

Yeap, like "Homicide - Life on the Streets" which is being repeated,
three or four Eps in a row, of a Thursday evening.

I haven't seen "Hill Street Blues" this century, I think, but wouldn't
    mind if it got repeated!!

Nope. The British antiques expert / seller comes to the small French
village when her husband was murdered there, and after that mystery was
solved she decided to stay. There are a few other ex-pat British people
already living there, but none are retired.

     - The Marlow Murder Club

    ??

Small UK village of Marlow where a retired archaeologist, a vicar's
wife, and a dog walker come together to solve murders, which grudging
approval of the police they are helping. Based on a series of books.

     - Queens of Mystery

    ??

A young female police detective moves back to her home town and is
unofficially helped by her three aunts to solve mystery crimes. There
is also an on-going mystery surrounding her parents.

     - The Good Ship Murder

    ??

Ex-police detective turned cruise line entertainer solves mysteries
involving the ship's guests (on and off the boat) around the
Mediterranean, with the help of the ship's second in command.

     - Moonflower Murders

    ??

A series of books that is being made into a trilogy of mini-series.
First one was "Magpie Murders", the second "Moonflower Murders", and
the up-coming third one is yet to get an official name. A book editor
solves crimes with the help of the fictional detective from her edited
books (she sees and talks to him).

     - Agatha Raisin

    Like it.

     - Ludwig

Seen a couple .. but missed the first Ep so don't know the "back-story".

A police detective goes missing and his twin brother (a newspaper
crossword setter) comes in to help the detective's wife find out what
happened, which he does by pretending to be his brother to go into the
police station and ends up having to solve other crimes while looking
    for clues about his brother.

     - Whitstable Pearl

    Good

The son in Whistable Pearl is played by the same actor who plays Harry
Wild's sidekick, so it can get a bit confusing if you watch both shows
    close toegether and aren't concetrating.

     - Professor T

    ??

Basically a bit of a knock-off of the US series "Monk". A university
crime professor with obsessive compulsive disorder helps the police to
solve crimes, while also trying to cope with his over-protective mother
and the 'suicide' of his father that he witnessed as a child. The
series has been remade by a few European countries, the latest being
the British version starring Ben Miller (who was one of the Death in
    Paradise detectives).

It's an okay, light-hearted, series, but there are so mny of
these amateur detectives "help" (i.e they solve the crimes)

Yeap. "Father Brown" and "Sister Boniface Mysteries" for
    starters!!

Hmm!! Are these two shows just an effort to portray the Roman
Catholic Church as a bunch of busy-bodies?? Oh!! No!! Wait!
"Grantchester" is a CoE based Cop-show!!

Then there's: - The Madame Blanc Mysteries

Pommies moving on to France Riviera in Retirement.

Nope. The British antiques expert / seller comes to the small French
village when her husband was murdered there, and after that mystery
was solved she decided to stay. There are a few other ex-pat British
people already living there, but none are retired.

Oh!! I must have missed that Eps. I thought her Partner was still there.

She does have a new boyfriend now, but at the start she came to the
French village because her husband died in a supposed car accident,
that turned out to be a murder. The show is writtern by two of the
actresses (Sally Lindsay who plays Jean White / Madame Blanc and Sue
Vincent who plays the village car mechanic Gloria Beauchamp).

    - The Marlow Murder Club

    ??

Small UK village of Marlow where a retired archaeologist, a vicar's
wife, and a dog walker come together to solve murders, which grudging
approval of the police they are helping. Based on a series of
    books.

Oh. Hang on, I might have seen one or two of them!

Season 2 recently started. It's not too bad.

    - Queens of Mystery

    ??

A young female police detective moves back to her home town and is
unofficially helped by her three aunts to solve mystery crimes.
There is also an on-going mystery surrounding her parents.

    Nope!

It's an okay, light-hearted show, if slightly strange. The usual small
British village with a ton of murders. :-)

Julie Graham is one of the aunts. She's been in lots of shows,
including being the big boss in Shetland for a while and one of the
group of mystery solvers in "The Bletchley Circle", as well as numerous
    period dramas.

    - The Good Ship Murder

    ??

Ex-police detective turned cruise line entertainer solves mysteries
involving the ship's guests (on and off the boat) around the
Mediterranean, with the help of the ship's second in command.

Police Detective turned Cruise entertainer .... Yeah!! I can see that happening!! .... NOT!!

It was the character's dream job, so he took the chance to make a
change (I think there was some sort of problem and he quit being a
detective - he's definitely no longer with his wife and daughter).
Every episode ends with him singing on stage in the boat's theatre room
... unfortunately the lead actor is a pretty awful "singer", even
though he did (somehow!) win the second season of X Factor UK. This
mystery show is really just someone's idea of an opportunity for him to
get into acting in a bigger way.

    - Ludwig

Seen a couple .. but missed the first Ep so don't know the
    "back-story".

A police detective goes missing and his twin brother (a newspaper
crossword setter) comes in to help the detective's wife find out what
happened, which he does by pretending to be his brother to go into
the police station and ends up having to solve other crimes while
looking for clues about his brother.

So in the First Ep, did "we" see what happened to the Real Detective?? I missed it.

Nope. It starts with Ludwig being contacted by his sister-in-law asking
him to come for a visit because they haven't seen Ludwig in a while,
but it's a ruse to get him to come help her investigate what has
happened to her husband. Even by the end of the season we don't know
what happened to the detective, other than he seems to have gone into
hiding without telling his family. A second season is being made.

    - Professor T

    ??

Basically a bit of a knock-off of the US series "Monk". A university
crime professor with obsessive compulsive disorder helps the police
    to solve crimes,

    Never seen either series.

while also trying to cope with his over-protective mother and the
'suicide' of his father that he witnessed as a child. The series has
been remade by a few European countries, the latest being the British
version starring Ben Miller (who was one of the Death in Paradise
    detectives).

Wasn't he the First Detective .... or just the First I saw??

Yep, he was the first one. He got killed off, but rather stupidly did
later return as a ghost. :-\

I wouldn't trust what TV stations put in the blurbs on their guides

Sky TV in New Zealand has had the exact same blurb from an old last

Yep, "Vera" ended. We saw the final episode a few weeks ago.

The actresss has said she doesn't think they should do a spin-off or a
prequel (young PC Vera), but what the show's makers decided to do is
    another question.

They could, but are not going to, even simply continue the show without
her character. It worked for "Taggart" for years after the death of the
actor who played Jim Taggart - they didn't change the show's name, just continued with the rest of the cast.

There are many other similar-ish shows. For example ...

A new one is "Ellis", although we haven't seen it yet, so can't say if
it is any good or not, and it might be more harder edged than Vera.

    Ellis
DCI Ellis is the last hope for failing investigations. She
takes over tough cases across northern England, often with
resistance from local police. But her formidable demeanour
disguises deep empathy fuelled by her complicated past.
    <https://www.imdb.com/title/tt30802702/>

"Bergerac" is back, although like all silly 'reboots', it is no where
near as good as the original. (In today's usual Politically Correct
idiocy, Charlie Hungerford is now a woman, played by Zoe Wanamaker.)

    Bergerac
Troubled detective Jim Bergerac is forced to confront a
troubling past case when a wealthy woman is murdered,
pushing him to overcome personal demons and reignite his
investigative prowess to navigate family tensions and law
    enforcement scrutiny.

Yep, "Vera" ended. We saw the final episode a few weeks ago.

The actresss has said she doesn't think they should do a spin-off or a >prequel (young PC Vera), but what the show's makers decided to do is
    another question.

They could, but are not going to, even simply continue the show without
her character. It worked for "Taggart" for years after the death of the
actor who played Jim Taggart - they didn't change the show's name, just >continued with the rest of the cast.

.... and, in the series we've just been viewing, one of her previous
DS's has come back as a DI.

They could continue with him like they did from "Morse" when D.I. Lewis continued .... before they, later, moved on to "Endeavour".

There are many other similar-ish shows. For example ...

Yeap! "When your on a good thing, ......"

"Bergerac" is back, although like all silly 'reboots', it is no where
near as good as the original. (In today's usual Politically Correct
idiocy, Charlie Hungerford is now a woman, played by Zoe Wanamaker.)

I've seen Zoe in something previously (yonks ago) and liked Her/It.

Doing an IMDB search on her ....

    https://www.imdb.com/find/?q=Zoe%20Wanamaker&ref_=nv_sr_sm

brought up Five Wanamakers .... a Theatre Family, maybe!!

       Bergerac
Troubled detective Jim Bergerac is forced to confront a
troubling past case when a wealthy woman is murdered,
pushing him to overcome personal demons and reignite his
investigative prowess to navigate family tensions and law
       enforcement scrutiny.

I don't think I bothered with the previous "Bergerac" series .... given
the Title, I may have thought it was a "Foreign" series and I hated
    reading sub-titles. ;-P

    Nope.

There's still six new episodes to air this season, plus the
spin-off (The War Between the Land and the Sea) is due for
release later on this year... and if the rumours do turn out to
be true about the show being cancelled, then it's highly likely
that Disney would still keep they episodes they put money into on
their service for a while. So there's plenty of time for you to
    catch-up.

Go on, go for it... you know it makes sense.

Nope. Both versions are set on the British-owned, but independent
Channel Island of Jersey and are all in English, apart from an very
occasional bit of French (some storylines had the characters going over
to England or France, plus French tourists and baddies coming to
    Jersey).

In the original series' Jim Bergerac was played by John Nettles (later
the first detective Barnaby in Midsomer Murders), which is when he
became a "household name". The theme tune is great too. Re-watching the original show is a good way to play "spot the star" as many now famous
actors appeared in it (for example, Annette Badland playing the police
office secretary, who has since been in many shows including Doctor
Who, Eastenders, and as the pathologist in recente seasons of Midsomer Murders).

We've only seen the first episode of the new "reboot" series, but it
doesn't seem anywhere as good and has butchered both the characters and
    the theme tune. :-(
