I know that picture is a joke, but the traditional enemies aren't
coming back any time soon ...

Doctor Who showrunner explains why he's moving away
from classic monsters - but confirms "nods"
    ---------------------------------------------------
"It's like a living text, Doctor Who - you can't deny the
fact that it's 62 years old now."

Doctor Who is returning with all-new threats for the Time
Lord and friends to face - but series boss Russell T Davies
has promised "little nods, little references" to the show's
    past.

Last year's episodes featured repeated mentions of the
Doctor's granddaughter Susan (played by Carole Ann Ford as
a series regular from 1963-64), much to the delight of fans.

Asked if we could expect similar nods in the latest season,
Davies confirmed that we'll get "little moments"
    acknowledging Doctor Who's rich history.

"I love those references," he told RadioTimes.com. "It's
like a living text, Doctor Who - you can't deny the fact
that it's 62 years old now."

Despite his affection for the series's past, Davies
explained that he remains keen to introduce new monsters
and villains rather than rely on an established rogues'
    gallery.

"I'm shifting it away from Daleks and Cybermen and the
Master... partly because I came in off the back of a story
[2022's The Power of the Doctor] that had literally the
Daleks and the Cybermen and the Master all in one episode
fighting Jodie Whittaker - which was brilliant, but once
that's happened, it's just common sense to take a
    different step...

"But little moments, little nods, little references... if
anyone can say, 'Oh, you look like a Drahvin!' then I'm
happy! I love that stuff - sometimes the writers put that
into scripts and we enjoy it, but they're just nods and
Easter eggs. That's the flavour of transmission today,
    I think."

In the upcoming season of Doctor Who, the Doctor (Ncuti
Gatwa) and new companion Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) will
confront a variety of formidable adversaries across time and
space, including Mr Ring-a-Ding - a cartoon character voiced
by Alan Cumming, who escapes into the real world - while a
mysterious force also seeks to prevent Belinda's return to
    Earth.

Doctor Who will air from Saturday 12th April at 6:50pm on
BBC One, with new episodes available from 8am on Saturdays
on BBC iPlayer in the UK. The series will be available on
    Disney+ outside of the UK.

No need to be angry... I've seen the previews, I'm confident
enough there's a scene of Skaro in there!

Plus sitting through more episodes of "The Acolyte" would be
more likely to put me to sleep than annoy me!

FWIW, my son thinks the supposed Dalek/Skaro scenes in the

Stop being a cheap skate, get a one month subscription to
    Disney+ and catch up!

We'll have to have a whip round here. If we all contributed A$1

Every Friday is a good Friday... it's the start of the weekend!

Hot Cross Buns were on supermarket shelves here in New Zealand on
Boxing Day / 26 December. :-\ There are numerous different types of
them these days, but a recent radio station poll resulted in 70% of
voters choosing the traditional version as the best.

This week here there is Good Friday holiday, followed by Easter Monday
holiday, followed by ANZAC Day holiday next Friday (25 April). Plus,

Here in Victoria, the schools had their term break from Saturday, 5th
April to Monday, 21st April (inclusive) then go back to school for three
days (Tues, Wed, Thurs) then have a three day weekend, 25th, 26th and 27th!!

How many (families) do you think might just wrap it all up into one

Well, that wasn’t true, was it?

Nobody should believe everything that RTD says. He's always
    thrown in red-herrings and mis-direction...

Or he just makes it up as he goes along, so when he says stuff
it's true at that stage... but then he changes his mind as
another jolly good fun idea comes into his head.

Recently, every time he's said something about "Doctor Who" I
find myself wishing he'd just STFU...

    That was predictable! ;-)

But on returning enemies... from RTD's comments about Cybermen
we knew they weren't coming back... not while he's in charge
anyway. I was hoping for Daleks and was wrong-footed by the S2
trailer, but we ended up with the Rani and Omega. Both of whom
wouldn't have been on my top five returning enemies list.

I'm disappointed that Ncuti's Doctor never got to face the
Daleks... although thinking about all the double entendres
that RTD would write for the 15th Doctor regarding big
protuberances, maybe it's just as well.

Doctor Who showrunner explains why he's moving away
from classic monsters - but confirms "nods"
    ---------------------------------------------------
"It's like a living text, Doctor Who - you can't deny the
fact that it's 62 years old now."

Doctor Who is returning with all-new threats for the Time
Lord and friends to face - but series boss Russell T Davies
has promised "little nods, little references" to the show's
    past.

Well, that wasn’t true, was it?

Yes, it was .... I mean, from what I've read here recently, The Doctor
*IS* a man (again) who travels through Time and Space. "little nods"!
    ;-P

I didn't bother watching it, but Susan was in the latest season, so
that would be another "nod" to the past of the show ... although not a
"classic monster" or baddie (so far!).

    Many a fan!

Returning monsters like the Timeless Child monster in
every single episode and the monsters Russel T Davies,
    Chris Chibnall and Steven Moffat?

    That was predictable! ;-)

But on returning enemies... from RTD's comments about Cybermen
we knew they weren't coming back... not while he's in charge
anyway. I was hoping for Daleks and was wrong-footed by the S2
trailer, but we ended up with the Rani and Omega. Both of whom
wouldn't have been on my top five returning enemies list.

I'm disappointed that Ncuti's Doctor never got to face the
Daleks... although thinking about all the double entendres
that RTD would write for the 15th Doctor regarding big
protuberances, maybe it's just as well.

    Not 15th! Real 14th!!

RTD didn't stop with his "nods"... from Davros in the CiN
special all the way through the 2023 specials and the two
full seasons of Ncuti Gatwa it was nothing but nods to the
    past!
