• Doctor Who S15/S2 - Ep 3: The Well

From Blueshirt@21:1/5 to All on Sat Apr 26 10:05:45 2025
    XPost: uk.media.tv.sf.drwho

Old school was ditched for a Disney+ morning; so I managed to
get the latest episode of "Doctor Who" and two episodes of
    "Andor" S2 in...

After referencing "Blink" last week, we get a sequel to
"Midnight" this week... with a touch of "The Satan Pit" and some
"Turn Left" vibes thrown in too. - A bit like RTD's Greatest
    Hits!

Oh, and a brief David Tennant cameo too, which the cynical might
think was there to help remind the faithful that he is actually
the real Doctor... or that he might even be coming back.
(Depending on what online rumour you choose to believe!)

"The Well" was a strong episode, with an atmospheric build up, a
monster we never actually see and an ending that could leave
another sequel open. (Step forward Big Finish.) Season 2 is
definitely starting a lot stronger than Season 1 did anyway.
"The Well" was a tension filled episode and it was another good
    advert for Ncuti's 15th Doctor.

Some nits: Earth is gone, and nobody has heard of it or the
human race... but "Lux" was set on Earth, as is next week's
episode ("Lucky Day")... so it can't have gone far! The Doctor
and Belinda can't reach Earth on May 24th 2025, but why can't
they go back to January/February/March 2025 and just wait [in a
hotel playing games] for May to come around? I mean, the Doctor
waited a whole year in the Christmas episode! Having the correct
uniform and space boots conveniently in the TARDIS to change
into stood out as well, as did the two spare helmets and none of
the squad of soldiers minding two complete strangers joining in
with them on their 'drop' to the planet.

Mrs Flood is this season's Susan Twist, turning up wherever the
Doctor is each week... lucky Doctor, he doesn't just get one
female stalker, he gets two! Although it is getting a bit
tiresome at this stage, we all know we are going to be
underwhelmed come the resolution to the mystery of her
character... but Anita Dobson is great so we shouldn't complain
    too much

Overall I'd go with a 7/10 for "The Well"... I thought it was as
good as last week's episode in some ways, better in others, but
different in tone and much more like "Doctor Who" should be.

I'll go along with that. That being said, what I was not very keen on
is how the story was structured...meaning how the story was written.
This story was written in the same fashion that a large number of New
Who stories have been written: straight forward, simplistic, and not
much plot development (no "swerves"...the story unfolds as one would
expect). This makes the stories formulaic and predictable which causes
even a decent story to become dull...simply because you can see the
"next step" in the story from a mile away. Lazy writing rearing its
    head again.

    I'll talk Andor after I've seen Eps. 2 & 3. :)

Well, this episode was 400k years in the future, no wonder no one knows
a planet that was last seen as rubble, on the date the Doctor tries to

Why did no one ask the people where they came from though. What were

Some crossing your own timeline mumbojumbo, which is only allowed on
special occasions (and for cheap tricks). ;P

I was thinking, why don't they go to 1 day before that date, too,
    though.

    Good point.

And I certainly wouldn't take the helmet off, never mind the body armour
    stuff, or whatever that was.

Though I guess with the lights highlighting the face, it'd be hard to
see anything much with that on. :P

6/10. I didn't much like Midnight either. I guess I just don't much like monsters you can't see (or can't see move, in the case of "Blink").

And I don't like the solution of nice person jumping into "the well".

Plus some idiot taking command and messing everything up so a bunch of
    crew got killed.

    And Dr Crybaby hit again.

It's "Doctor Who", everything is just a rumour... until it's
not. Fans have been speculating about things that could happen
in seasons for as long as I can remember. A lot of the time we
were way off the mark! But it was still fun.

Best of the season so far me... it is all relative though, as we
are not talking 'classic' by any means.

    And Dr Crybaby hit again.

I like the "Dr Crybaby" term... we'll have to keep that. :-)

    Hah, nice. :)

After referencing "Blink" last week, we get a sequel to
"Midnight" this week... with a touch of "The Satan Pit" and some
"Turn Left" vibes thrown in too. - A bit like RTD's Greatest
    Hits!

I kept expecting something related to devil creature, until they brought
    up Midnight.

Oh, and a brief David Tennant cameo too, which the cynical might
think was there to help remind the faithful that he is actually
the real Doctor... or that he might even be coming back.
(Depending on what online rumour you choose to believe!)

    Hah.

Are there any online rumours with actual facts backing it up, or just
    hopes and speculations?

"The Well" was a strong episode, with an atmospheric build up, a
monster we never actually see and an ending that could leave
another sequel open. (Step forward Big Finish.) Season 2 is
definitely starting a lot stronger than Season 1 did anyway.
"The Well" was a tension filled episode and it was another good
    advert for Ncuti's 15th Doctor.

    Hm, it was ok.

Some nits: Earth is gone, and nobody has heard of it or the
human race... but "Lux" was set on Earth, as is next week's
episode ("Lucky Day")... so it can't have gone far!

Well, this episode was 400k years in the future, no wonder no one knows
a planet that was last seen as rubble, on the date the Doctor tries to
    get to.

Why did no one ask the people where they came from though. What were
    they supposed to be?

The Doctor and Belinda can't reach Earth on May 24th 2025, but why
can't they go back to January/February/March 2025 and just wait
[in a hotel playing games] for May to come around? I mean, the Doctor
waited a whole year in the Christmas episode!

Some crossing your own timeline mumbojumbo, which is only allowed on
special occasions (and for cheap tricks). ;P

I was thinking, why don't they go to 1 day before that date, too,
    though.

Having the correct uniform and space boots conveniently in the TARDIS
to change into stood out as well, as did the two spare helmets and
none of the squad of soldiers minding two complete strangers joining
in with them on their 'drop' to the planet.

    Good point.

And I certainly wouldn't take the helmet off, never mind the body armour >stuff, or whatever that was.

Though I guess with the lights highlighting the face, it'd be hard to
see anything much with that on. :P

Sigh, yeah. And it's probably not going to make any sense at all.

Overall I'd go with a 7/10 for "The Well"... I thought it was as
good as last week's episode in some ways, better in others, but
different in tone and much more like "Doctor Who" should be.

6/10. I didn't much like Midnight either. I guess I just don't much like >monsters you can't see (or can't see move, in the case of "Blink").

And I don't like the solution of nice person jumping into "the well".

Plus some idiot taking command and messing everything up so a bunch of
    crew got killed.

    And Dr Crybaby hit again.

Did you notice the Alien parallel?

Not necessarily. A rumor can be factual...just that the fact(s) are as
    yet unverified.

For example, one of the other band directors in my area just accepted
the band director position at another school. And while it was true,
and some of us knew that he had taken the position, it wasn't announced publicly (official verification) by both schools that he had done so for another 3 weeks.

No, completely based on fact. My colleague had, in fact, been offered
and accepted the new position three weeks prior to it being announced
publicly by the respective boards of education for each school district.
It is done that way for three reasons: 1. By law, once personnel
decisions have been made, they must be publicly announced at the next
stated board meeting, 2. It gives the school district making the hire
time to inform the other candidates that they were not selected for the position, and, 3. The school district with the new vacancy can now
publicly announce (again, by law) the position is available to apply for.
