• Comics Kingdom reboot - seeing next week's comics?!

From Sharon Tuttle@21:1/5 to All on Wed Feb 28 13:12:18 2024
Writing about 12:30 pm on Wednesday, February 28:

Is anyone else seeing comics through March 6 (!) when logging into the
revamped Comics Kingdom site and trying to read today's comics...?

Weird! (And of course I can't resist reading ahead...!)

This apparently is the vaunted "early access" for subscribers. There
doesn't seem to be any way to turn it off, or to redirect to today, or
to read from today to March 6 without loading your favorites page (three
at a time) to work backwards through all the intervening days.

    Complete garbage redesign.

And that's why I switched to Arcamax (well, one of the reasons).

The good(ish) news is that they have a new Free Community Subscription
tier that doesn't offer (impose) early access, and supports building a Favorites page. The result still presents the annoying three-at-a-time interface, with no useful control over sort order, but at least it's
usable. Log out, then use another email address to sign up that way.

    That's a feature?! Yikes!

I noticed having to click "show more" twice to get to that day's comics
    -- ick!

And I see today that if I don't log in and just open a particular's
comic's page, I see today's strip (until I hit their free limit, I suspect).

If I wasn't subscribing to try and support cartoonists, I would *stop* subscribing due to this redesign. 8-P

The last week of "Olive & Popeye" is MIA. If you use the search
function to try and find the main page for it, it gives a 404 error
    on the offered link.

It looks like "Free Community Subscription" is no longer offered
(instead they have a 7 day free trial of either of their paid tiers). I
set one up back when the new website launched; it still works as
described above except the favorites page kicks me out after reading
about a dozen comics. Not OK.

As far as I can tell (their subscription benefits lists don't mention
it) having a functional favorites page will now cost $50/year. (Some possibility it comes with the lower tier at $30/year.} This is up from $20/year in 2022 and 2023. Gocomics currently remains at $15/year for
    many more comics of interest.
