Sam is a squid.  What could be so horrible about his face ?

    Lynn

Because he's actually a Sqid, not a squid, and throughout the comic, an >unmasked Sqid (well, Sam) has always caused horrors to those who see it.

    Sounds like a Lovecraft bit.

Polly the Emu finds Sam’s facial tentacles to be delicious. http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1400/fc01346.htm

Frogs apparently find Sam’s whole body to be delicious. http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1400/fc01348.htm

And so, apparently, do cattle. http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1400/fc01349.htm

Yeah... I recall one where someone saw his face ... or maybe it
was the nude sculpture(painting?) of himself that he submitted
    to an art show...

Straitjacketed witness to the "work" being led away, screaming
"My eyes! I must gouge out my eyes! If I don't, I might
    see it again!!!"
